Some opponents believed a western route would have been cheaper. Others feared the toll would prevent people from using the bridge. Some experts even worried that the pylons would not be stable on the shale. They thought the bridge might be dangerous or unsustainable for the region. They also feared the detour would hurt the local economy of Millau. However, the completed viaduct has since become a celebrated landmark of modern engineering.
