The scale of our galaxy is truly immense and difficult to grasp. While the visible disk has a specific diameter, recent simulations suggest even more exists. This group is part of the larger Virgo Supercluster. The Virgo Supercluster is itself a component of the even larger Laniakea Supercluster. 
Modern science uses advanced tools to map this complex system. Data from the European Space Agency’s Gaia telescope provides detailed maps of stellar structures. These maps show the distribution of stars, gas, and dust throughout the spiral arms. Astronomers can now trace the history of star formation across the galactic disk. We know the galaxy contains between 100 and 400 billion stars. It also contains at least that many planets. Understanding the Milky Way helps us understand the laws of physics that govern the entire universe.
