Durkheim believed that studying society should be a real science. He did not want to just guess about how people act. Instead, he used tools like statistics and surveys. He also used historical observation to find real facts. He studied how different groups, like Roman Catholics and Protestants, behaved. He looked for patterns in these groups to understand social facts. To him, a social fact was something that belongs to the whole group. He believed sociology should look at the whole picture of society.

Émile Durkheim was a French sociologist who transformed how we study human groups. He is considered one of the principal architects of modern social science. This means he helped build the foundations for the field alongside Karl Marx and Max Weber. Durkheim wanted to understand how societies maintain their integrity and coherence. He focused on how people stay connected in a modern era. In this era, traditional religious and social ties became less universal. New social institutions began to emerge to take their place.

Durkheim believed that sociology must be a legitimate and rigorous science. He did not want to rely on abstract philosophy or mere psychology. Instead, he promoted a method called the hypothetico-deductive model. This involves using scientific tools to test ideas about society. He utilized statistics, surveys, and historical observation to gather data. He specifically applied these tools to study suicide rates in different groups. He compared Roman Catholic and Protestant populations to find social patterns. By doing this, he helped distinguish social science from other fields.

To understand his method, one must understand his concept of social facts. Durkheim argued that sociology should be the science of institutions. He defined institutions as the beliefs and modes of behavior created by a collectivity. He famously stated that researchers should "consider social facts as things." This means social phenomena should be studied as objective realities. He believed sociology should be purely holistic. This approach focuses on phenomena belonging to society at large. It does not limit itself to the specific actions of single individuals. This perspective is known as structural functionalism.
