He is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the Spanish language. Many literary experts consider him one of the world's most important novelists. His most famous work is the two-part novel, Don Quixote. This book is often called the first modern novel. Many famous authors have labeled it the best book of all time. Because of his immense literary contribution, Spanish is sometimes called "the language of Cervantes."

Cervantes' life was marked by significant physical and personal challenges. In 1570, he joined a Spanish Navy infantry regiment. He fought in the Battle of Lepanto in October 1571. During this naval conflict, he suffered three separate wounds to his chest.

One of these injuries rendered his left arm and hand useless. This led to his lifelong nickname, "El manco de Lepanto," or "the one-handed man of Lepanto." Despite this disability, he remained proud of his military service. He once wrote that he lost the movement of his left hand for the glory of his right.

His experiences with captivity were equally profound and difficult. In September 1575, Ottoman corsairs captured Cervantes and his brother, Rodrigo.

They were taken to Algiers to be held for ransom. While his brother was ransomed in 1577, Cervantes remained in captivity for five years. He made four different attempts to escape during this period. Finally, in 1580, the Trinitarians, a religious charity, paid his ransom. This allowed him to return to Madrid and resume his life.

Cervantes' early life and family background contain many historical mysteries. He was likely born around September 29, 1547, in Alcalá de Henares. His father, Rodrigo de Cervantes, was a barber-surgeon who often struggled with debt. His mother was Leonor de Cortinas, a resourceful woman who supported the family. Cervantes was the second of seven children. Some historians have debated his ethnic background, suggesting his parents might have been New Christians. This would mean they were Catholics of Jewish ancestry. However, many scholars argue there is only flimsy evidence for this claim.

His professional life involved many different roles beyond writing. After his return from captivity, he worked as a purchasing agent for the government. In 1587, he served as the Commissary of the Royal Galleons in Seville. This role involved obtaining wheat and oil for the Spanish Armada. He also worked as a government tax collector.

In 1584, he married Catalina de Salazar y Palacios. These various jobs often provided little financial stability, as he spent much of his life in relative poverty.

Cervantes produced a wide variety of literary works throughout his career. His first significant novel, La Galatea, was published in 1585.

His masterpiece, Don Quixote, was released in two parts, appearing in 1605 and 1615. He also wrote the 12 Novelas ejemplares, which are known as the Exemplary Novels. His other writings include the long poem Viaje del Parnaso and several plays, such as Ocho comedias y ocho entremeses. His novel Los trabajos de Persiles y Sigismunda was published posthumously in 1617.

Today, the legacy of Cervantes connects to global culture and literature. He died on April 22, 1616, and was buried in the Convent of the Bareft Trinitarians in Madrid.
