For example, in 1765, Charles III sent sheep to Saxony. In 1786, King Louis XVI of France received 366 sheep to start a stud at Rambouillet.

Researchers believe Spanish ewes were crossed with various types of rams at different historical periods. These rams included Italian breeds during the Roman era and North African breeds during the medieval period. By the 15th century, English fine-wool rams were also introduced into the mix. This gradual process of mixing different genetics eventually produced the characteristic fine wool we see today.

The development of the breed changed the economy of the Iberian Peninsula. In the late 15th century, the quality of Spanish wool increased significantly. This improvement was encouraged by the monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella. By the mid-16th century, Merino wool was considered equal to the finest English wools. During this time, the most expensive grades of cloth could be made entirely from Merino fibers. The sheep were managed through a system of seasonal migration known as transhumance. Flocks would graze on southern Spanish plains during the winter. In the summer, they moved to the northern highlands. This movement was organized by an organization called the Mesta. They managed designated routes called cañadas reales to ensure sheep had water and rest.

The global spread of the Merino began in earnest during the 18th century. As Spanish restrictions eased, flocks were sent to various European royal courts. In 1765, Charles III of Spain sent Escurial sheep to Saxony. In 1775, sheep were sent to Hungary, and in 1786, they reached Prussia. That same year, King Louis XVI of France received 366 selected sheep. These animals founded the famous Rambouillet stud at the Royal Farm. In Saxony, breeders used scientific crossing methods to improve the sheep further. By 1802, the region held four million Saxon Merino sheep. This made German wool some of the finest in the world.

The Merino breed has since branched into many distinct types and variants. In the Americas, notable groups include the American Merino and the Delaine Merino. In Oceania, the landscape is shaped by the Australian Merino, the Booroola Merino, and the Peppin Merino. Physical traits can vary between these groups. In Australia, the Peppin brothers used a ram named Emperor to transform the local Merino population. Even South Africa's sheep populations trace back to Escurial sheep given to the Dutch in 1790. These various historical movements created the massive global industry seen today.

Understanding the Merino requires looking at the microscopic level of its wool. The fibers are significantly thinner than a single strand of human hair.
