The surface is covered in many craters. These are holes made by space rocks hitting the ground. Mercury's surface looks a lot like our Moon.

Mercury has a very large center. This center is called a core. The core is made of metal, mostly iron. It is so big that it takes up 57% of the planet. This makes Mercury very heavy for its size. The planet also has a crust and a mantle. The mantle is the layer between the core and the crust.

Because Mercury is so close to the Sun, it gets very hot. But some parts stay in the dark. These are the poles, or the top and bottom of the planet.

These dark spots might hold water ice. Scientists use space probes to study these secrets. One probe was named MESSENGER. It helped us learn about the planet's many parts.

This means it has a solid surface like Earth. Mercury is much smaller than the giant moons Ganymede and Titan. However, it is still a very heavy planet for its size. Its density is the second highest in the Solar System. Only Earth is more dense than Mercury.

The planet has a very interesting way it works inside. It has a solid crust and a mantle on the outside. Underneath those layers is a huge metal core. This core is mostly made of iron. It is so large that it takes up 57% of the planet's volume. Scientists think the core has a solid outer part and a liquid middle. There is also a solid inner core at the very center.

People have looked at Mercury for a very long time. Ancient Greeks called it "planetes" because it seemed to twinkle. They also called it "planetes asteres" for its fast motion. The Romans named it after their messenger god, Mercury. This was because the planet moves across the sky very quickly.

In 1974, a spacecraft named Mariner 10 made the first successful flyby. Since then, orbiters like MESSENGER and BepiColombo have explored it. These missions help us learn more about its history.

It has many craters caused by space rocks hitting it. The largest one is called Caloris Planitia. This crater is about one-third the size of the whole planet. You can also see long ridges and steep cliffs called rupes. These ridges likely formed as the planet cooled and shrank.

Some dark spots at the poles might even hold water ice.

Mercury's day and year work in a strange way. It takes 88 Earth days to orbit the Sun once. It also takes 58.65 Earth days to spin once. This creates a special ratio between its spin and its orbit. Because of this, one solar day lasts about 176 Earth days. This is twice as long as its whole year! This means one side stays in the sun for a long time. Then, it stays in the dark for a long time. This makes the temperatures change a lot.

The internal structure of Mercury is dominated by a massive metallic core. This core likely contains iron, nickel, silicon, and perhaps sulfur or carbon. The core is much larger than Earth's core. It occupies about 57% of Mercury's total volume.

Models suggest the core has several layers. There is a solid outer core, a deeper liquid core layer, and a solid inner core. Above this core sits a mantle and a solid silicate crust. The mantle-crust layer is about 500 kilometers thick. Some data suggests the crust alone is 20 to 50 kilometers thick.

Mercury's surface is heavily cratered and looks much like the Moon.

These craters formed because Mercury lacks a thick atmosphere to slow down incoming space rocks. The largest impact site is Caloris Planitia. This basin is so large that its diameter is about one-third of the planet's diameter. The surface also features narrow ridges called dorsa. These ridges may have formed as the core and mantle cooled and contracted. This contraction caused the crust to wrinkle. You can also see steep cliffs called rupes.

Scientists have several theories about why Mercury has such a large iron core. One hypothesis is the giant impact hypothesis. This suggests a large object, called a planetesimal, struck Mercury long ago. This impact might have stripped away much of the original rocky crust and mantle. Another theory involves the early Sun. High temperatures near the planet might have vaporized much of its surface rock. This rock vapor could have been blown away by solar winds. A third idea suggests that lighter particles were lost during the planet's formation. Recent data from the MESSENGER mission found high levels of potassium and sulfur. This suggests that the extreme heat of an impact or vaporization might not have happened.

Mercury's relationship with the Sun creates a very strange cycle of time. The planet is in a spin-orbit resonance. This means its sidereal year and sidereal day exist in a 3:2 ratio. It takes 88 Earth days to orbit the Sun. It takes 58.65 Earth days to rotate once on its axis. Because of this resonance, one solar day lasts about 176 Earth days. This is exactly twice the length of a Mercurian year. This means one side of the planet stays in sunlight for an entire year. Then, it stays in darkness for the next year. This causes extreme temperature changes across the surface.

Humans have observed Mercury for thousands of years. Ancient Greeks called it "planetes" because it seemed to twinkle. The Romans named it after their messenger god, Mercury, because it moves so quickly across the sky.

Space exploration of the planet began in earnest in 1974 with the Mariner 10 flyby. Since then, the MESSENGER orbiter and the BepiColombo mission have provided much more detail. We are still learning about its geological history through these probes. The BepiColombo mission is expected to arrive in 2026 to provide even more data.

Mercury's environment is quite harsh. It has an extremely tenuous exosphere rather than a thick atmosphere. It also has a faint magnetic field. This field is just strong enough to deflect solar winds.

Because the planet has a very small axial tilt, its poles are permanently shadowed. Scientists believe water ice might exist in these dark craters.

Looking into the far future, Mercury may not last forever. In about seven or eight billion years, the Sun will become a red giant. When this happens, Mercury will likely be destroyed along with other inner planets.
