His adult life involved living in several major cities. In 1928, he married Chaya Mushka in Warsaw, Poland. They were married for 60 years. They lived in Berlin during the Weimar Republic. There, he studied mathematics, physics, and philosophy at the University of Berlin. He even attended lectures by Erwin Schrödinger. Later, he moved to Paris. In Paris, he took a two-year course in electrical engineering.

Schneerson eventually moved to New York City. After his wife died in 1988, he moved into a study. This study was located above the central Lubavitch synagogue on Eastern Parkway. He became a major figure in American Jewish life. In 1978, the U.S. Congress asked President Jimmy Carter to honor him. They asked to designate his birthday as a national education day. It is now known as Education and Sharing Day. In 1994, he posthumously received the Congressional Gold Medal. This was for his contributions to education, morality, and charity.

His leadership also involved complex religious debates. During his life, many followers believed he was the Messiah. This belief was not held by all Chabadniks. Scholars debate whether he ever officially proclaimed this. These views caused fierce criticism from other Orthodox leaders. One notable critic was Elazar Shach. Despite these controversies, his impact remained vast. Even after his death on June 12, 1994, his influence continues. Many people make a pilgrimage to his resting place in Queens to pray.
