Many different plants live here. They hold 10% of all plant species on Earth. Some plants have sclerophyll leaves. This means they have hard leaves. These leaves often have a waxy layer. This layer helps the plant keep its water during dry times.
These lands can look like many things. They can be thick forests or open grasslands. They can also be shrublands. Shrublands are dense groups of small trees and bushes. 
Fire is also a big part of these places. Some plants are pyrophytes. These are plants that love fire. Fire helps them make new seeds and clear away old plants. But too much fire can be bad. If fires happen too often, some plants cannot grow back.
These lands are very special. They are found in places like California, Chile, and Australia. They are also in the Mediterranean Basin. We must work to protect them.

These special lands are found in many places around the globe. You can find them in the Mediterranean Basin. They also grow in the Chilean Matorral and the California chaparral. Other areas include the Fynbos in South Africa and the Mallee in Australia. 
Fire is a big part of how these lands work. Many plants here are pyrophytes, which means they are "fire-loving." 

These beautiful places face many hard jobs today. Humans have changed these lands through logging and building cities. Overgrazing by animals and farming also cause problems. Sometimes, new plants from other places move in and take over. This is called degradation. 
Mediterranean forests, woodlands, and scrub is a major global biome. It is defined by specific weather patterns and highly diverse plant life.
Vegetation in this biome follows a complex, interleaved pattern. Scientists often call these landscapes a mosaic habitat. This means different types of plants grow together in complex patterns. These patterns are created by variations in soil and topography. Wind exposure and sun exposure also play a role. Fire history is another factor that shapes these patterns. Much of the woody vegetation is sclerophyll. This term comes from a Greek word meaning "hard-leaved."
There are several distinct types of vegetation within this biome. Forests are often found in riparian areas where summer water is available. These forests are generally composed of broadleaf trees. For example, California has oak and mixed sclerophyll forests. Southwest Australia has Eucalyptus forests. Central Chile is home to Nothofagus forests. Coniferous forests also occur, especially around the Mediterranean. 
Shrublands are another major part of this biome. These are dense thickets of evergreen sclerophyll shrubs and small trees. They are most common near the seacoast. These plants are often adapted to wind and salt air from the ocean. Shrublands have many different names depending on their location. In California and southern Portugal, they are called chaparral. In Chile and southern Spain, they are called matorral. Other names include garrigue, maquis, macchia, and fynbos.
Fire is a powerful medium of change in these ecosystems. The hot, dry summers make these regions prone to frequent fires. Many plants are pyrophytes, which means they are fire-loving. These plants may actually depend on fire for reproduction. Fire also helps recycle nutrients and remove dead vegetation. 
Extreme fire frequency can also damage the ecosystem. If fires occur less than ten years apart, it causes problems. Some plants, called obligate seeders, cannot reach reproductive size before the next fire. This causes the community to shift toward sprouter-dominance. If fires continue too often, even resprouting species can die from exhausting their underground energy. 
The Fynbos of South Africa is a particularly remarkable example. It is considered a separate floral kingdom by many phytogeographers. The Fynbos contains about 8,600 vascular plant species. Remarkably, 68% of these species are endemic, meaning they are found nowhere else. 
Despite their resilience, these ecoregions are very vulnerable. Many areas face severe degradation and habitat loss. Human activities like urbanization and agriculture are major causes. Logging and the introduction of invasive species also threaten these lands.
