Many different kinds of plants live in these regions. Much of the woody plants are sclerophyll. This is a Greek word that means "hard-leaved."

These plants actually need fire to help them make seeds and recycle nutrients. In California and Australia, native peoples used fire to clear brush for many years. However, too much fire can be a problem. If fires happen more than every ten years, some plants cannot grow back in time. On July 25, 2023, huge wildfires burned in nine countries like Italy and Portugal. These fires were caused by high heat, dry air, and strong winds.

These beautiful places face many hard jobs today. Humans have changed these lands through logging and building cities. Overgrazing by animals and farming also cause problems. Sometimes, new plants from other places move in and take over. This is called degradation.

Most of these regions experience dry summers and rainy winters. In low-lying inland areas, summers are typically hot. However, summers can be cooler near cold seas. Winters are usually mild to cool in low areas. In higher or inland locations, winters can become quite cold. This biome is incredibly important for global biodiversity. It collectively harbors 10% of all the plant species on Earth.

Vegetation in this biome follows a complex, interleaved pattern. Scientists often call these landscapes a mosaic habitat. This means different types of plants grow together in complex patterns. These patterns are created by variations in soil and topography. Wind exposure and sun exposure also play a role. Fire history is another factor that shapes these patterns. Much of the woody vegetation is sclerophyll. This term comes from a Greek word meaning "hard-leaved."

Sclerophyllous plants usually have small, dark leaves. These leaves have a waxy outer layer. This layer helps the plant retain moisture during the dry summer months.

There are several distinct types of vegetation within this biome. Forests are often found in riparian areas where summer water is available. These forests are generally composed of broadleaf trees. For example, California has oak and mixed sclerophyll forests. Southwest Australia has Eucalyptus forests. Central Chile is home to Nothofagus forests. Coniferous forests also occur, especially around the Mediterranean.

Woodland areas are also common, such as oak woodlands in the Mediterranean Basin. Savannas and grasslands exist as well. The California Central Valley contains the largest Mediterranean grassland ecoregion. Portugal features a cork oak savanna known as montado.

Shrublands are another major part of this biome. These are dense thickets of evergreen sclerophyll shrubs and small trees. They are most common near the seacoast. These plants are often adapted to wind and salt air from the ocean. Shrublands have many different names depending on their location. In California and southern Portugal, they are called chaparral. In Chile and southern Spain, they are called matorral. Other names include garrigue, maquis, macchia, and fynbos.

Some shrublands are natural, while others result from land degradation. This degradation can be caused by logging, overgrazing, or major fires.

Fire is a powerful medium of change in these ecosystems. The hot, dry summers make these regions prone to frequent fires. Many plants are pyrophytes, which means they are fire-loving. These plants may actually depend on fire for reproduction. Fire also helps recycle nutrients and remove dead vegetation.

In 2023, devastating wildfires burned in nine Mediterranean countries. These fires were fueled by high temperatures, dry conditions, and strong winds. They caused massive destruction to homes and forests.

The Fynbos of South Africa is a particularly remarkable example. It is considered a separate floral kingdom by many phytogeographers. The Fynbos contains about 8,600 vascular plant species. Remarkably, 68% of these species are endemic, meaning they are found nowhere else.

This amount of plant life is equivalent to 40% of the species found in the United States and Canada combined. This massive amount of diversity is packed into an area the size of the state of Maine. This makes the Fynbos one of the most diverse ecoregions on the planet.

Despite their resilience, these ecoregions are very vulnerable. Many areas face severe degradation and habitat loss. Human activities like urbanization and agriculture are major causes. Logging and the introduction of invasive species also threaten these lands.

In the Mediterranean basin and California, these issues have led to soil erosion. Many native plants and animals have become endangered or extinct. Protecting these diverse biomes is essential for maintaining the Earth's biological heritage.
