In medieval Europe, people made many new tools. These tools changed how they lived.

During the Middle Ages, Europe saw a huge wave of new inventions. This time was filled with many smart ways to work and grow. 
Farming changed because of new tools and smarter plans.
Moving animals and water also became much easier.

New machines even changed how people learned and stayed warm. 
Medieval technology refers to the tools and methods used in Europe under Christian rule. Following the Renaissance of the 12th century, Europe experienced a radical shift in innovation. This era saw a rapid increase in new inventions and better ways to manage production. Historians like Alfred Crosby have described this period as a technological revolution. These advancements drove significant economic growth across the continent. Many of these changes were not brand-new ideas. Instead, they were refinements of older Roman or Byzantine techniques. They also came from cultural exchanges with the Islamic world, China, and India. 
Agriculture underwent massive changes through better tools and smarter land use. The carruca was a heavy, wheeled plough used primarily in Northern Europe. This device used four main parts to prepare the soil. First, a coulter cut vertically into the top sod. Second, a plowshare cut horizontally to detach the soil. Third, a moldboard curled the sod outward to turn the furrow. Finally, a team of eight oxen pulled the heavy machine. Because the carruca was large and hard to turn, farmers began using long, rectangular fields. This change maximized efficiency and helped clear forests in rocky Northern soils. 
Animal management also improved to support larger farms. As farmers replaced oxen with horses, they needed new equipment. Early throat-and-girth harnesses were unreliable and could cause animals to choke. By the eighth century, the rigid collar became common. This collar rested on the horse's shoulders to allow unobstructed breathing. This design placed the weight where the horse could best support it. Additionally, horseshoes became popular in the north to protect hooves from rocky terrain. In the 10th century, shoes weighed about one-quarter of a pound and used six nails. By the 14th century, they weighed nearly half a pound and used eight nails. 
To keep soil healthy, medieval farmers used sophisticated crop rotation. The two-field system involved growing a crop in one field while the other lay fallow. The fallow field was used for livestock to regain nutrients through waste. Later, the three-field system became even more productive. In this system, one field held a spring crop like barley. A second field held a winter crop like wheat. A third field was left empty to rest and feed livestock. This method meant only one-third of the land was unused at a time. Scholars believe this increased food yields by up to 50 percent.
Water technology provided power and essential resources for growing populations. Water mills were developed from ancient origins and used for many tasks. They powered sawmills for timber and stone, and were used in mining to raise ore. In England alone, the Domesday Book recorded around 6,500 turnable mills. For moving water, people used qanats, which were underground tunnel systems. These tunnels had a gradual slope so gravity could pull water to villages. Medieval inventors also used the Roman aqueduct system as a blueprint for water transport. In 1126, Carthusian monks in France drilled the first artesian well. This used underground pressure to force water up a hole without a pump. 
Maritime and military technology changed how Europeans interacted with the world. Europeans perfected the military potential of gunpowder, which had originated in China. This helped lead to European expansion in the Modern Era. At sea, shipbuilding improved with multi-masted ships and lateen sails. The sternpost-mounted rudder and frame-led hull construction made ships more stable. Navigational tools like the dry compass, the astrolabe, and the Jacob's staff allowed for better travel. These tools enabled the global achievements of the Age of Exploration.
Finally, civil technologies improved daily life and the spread of ideas. The wine press was a large wooden machine used to crush grapes. It used a giant disc to press juice from a wooden basket. This was an expensive tool that only the wealthy could often afford. Near the end of the Middle Ages, Johannes Gutenberg invented mechanical printing. This allowed knowledge to be shared with a much wider population. It helped create a more egalitarian society and allowed people to dominate other cultures through knowledge. Even home life changed, as some areas used underfloor channels for central heating.
