A major turning point in this history occurred in the year 825. The Abbasid caliph Al-Ma'mun founded the House of Wisdom, or Bayt al-Hikma, in Baghdad. This institution was modeled after the Academy of Gundishapur. The House of Wisdom became a center for translating the entire known corpus of classical literature. A Christian physician named Hunayn ibn Ishaq led a dedicated team of translators there. They worked to bring the works of Aristotle, Plato, and Archimedes into the Arabic language.
