The geography of the province is defined by dramatic shifts in landscape. Most of the central and eastern areas consist of dry desert. The Hejaz mountains run through the center of the province. These mountains vary in elevation from 600 meters to 2,000 meters. They act as a barrier between the Nafud desert and the western coastal plains. These plains run parallel to the Red Sea coast. The coastline stretches for approximately 700 kilometers. Several archipelagos and coral reefs exist near the shore. For example, the Great Coral Reef lies 15 km northwest of Jeddah. The Five Coral Reef is located 25 km away.

Life in the province is supported by specific natural features. Agriculture occurs in various wadis and oases. A wadi is a valley or a dry riverbed that may hold water. In these areas, people grow crops such as barley, fruits, and dates. The city of Ta'if is particularly famous for its agriculture. It is known for cultivating the Rosa × damascena. This flower is commonly called the Damask rose or the Ta'if rose. The province also contains protected natural areas. These include the Mahazat as-Sayd Protected Area and the Saja Umm Ar-Rimth Natural Reserve. These sites are managed by the Saudi Wildlife Authority.

The history of the region is deeply tied to ancient trade and religion. Long ago, Mecca was an oasis on a caravan trade route. This route connected the Mediterranean world to South Arabia, East Africa, and South Asia. The town sat midway between Maƒrib in the south and Petra in the north. Historically, tribes like the Quraysh, Banu Kinanah, and Thaqif inhabited the area. Under the Quraysh, Mecca functioned as a type of city-state. It maintained strong commercial links with Europe, Ethiopia, and the rest of Arabia. Islamic tradition states that Abraham and Ishmael built the Kaʹbah. This cube-shaped stone building is the central point of pilgrimage.

Over many centuries, several different powers controlled the province. The region saw the rule of the Umayyad and ʻAbbāsid caliphates. In the mid-10th century, the sharifs began to rule the city. Sharifs are descendants of Muhammad. They held power in the region for nearly 1,000 years. Later, the Egyptian Mamlūk sultans took control in 1269. The Ottoman Empire gained dominion over the area in 1517. After World War I, the House of SaǞ contested control with the sharifs. In 1925, King Ibn SaǞ conquered the region. This event made Mecca a province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Today, the province is a major hub for both people and industry. Most residents live in three main cities: Jeddah, Mecca, and Ta'if. Jeddah is the largest city in the province and the second-largest in Saudi Arabia. As of 2020, its population was estimated at 2,867,446. Mecca is the second-largest city in the province, with 1,323,624 people. The province is a global center for Muslim pilgrims. People visit for the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages throughout the year. During the Hajj, the population can increase by up to 2 million people. The province also hosts modern infrastructure like the Haramain High Speed Railway. This is the first and only high-speed railway in the country.

Economic development has transformed the landscape in recent decades. The exploitation of petroleum resources after World War II drove significant growth. The province now hosts important industrial facilities. There are oil refineries in Rabigh and oil export facilities in Jeddah. The province is also home to the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. Administratively, the province is divided into 17 governorates. These are split into Category A and Category B. Mecca serves as the capital and administrative headquarters. An Emir, or Governor, leads the province. The current Emir is Khalid Al-Faisal, who has served since 2015.
