In the past, people used extra grass to feed animals during the winter. This helped protect nearby forests from being grazed too much.

Different kinds of meadows exist all over the world. Perpetual meadows stay as grasslands because of the environment. For example, alpine meadows stay open because they are high in the mountains. Coastal meadows stay open because of salt sprays from the sea. Desert meadows exist where there is very little rain. In the United Kingdom, hay meadows are quite rare now. Professor John Rodwell says England and Wales lost about 97% of them in the last century. In the UK, 25% of meadows are found in Worcestershire.

Today, we are finding new ways to use meadows. Some people are creating urban meadows in big cities.

These are often better than regular city lawns. Lawns need a lot of mowing, which can be hard on local life. Meadows can help protect many different kinds of plants and animals. This involves allowing grasses to grow unchecked before they are periodically cut. This process creates a surplus of biomass that can be stored for winter. This historical method allowed livestock to be kept in enclosures for better breeding control. In nature, meadows also act as important carbon sinks to mitigate climate change. Deep-rooted grasses pull carbon from the air and store it in the soil.

However, intensive farming can disrupt these processes. Frequent mowing, mineral fertilizers, and insecticides can reduce species diversity and organism abundance.

There are three primary types of meadows: agricultural, transitional, and perpetual. Agricultural meadows are managed specifically for hay or livestock fodder. They can be lowland or upland fields using self-sown or hand-sown seeds. Transitional meadows occur when cleared land is no longer grazed or cut. This leads to luxuriant growth of wildflowers and grasses, but it is a temporary state. Eventually, woody plants and shrubs move in and shade out the grasses.

Perpetual meadows, or natural meadows, are maintained indefinitely by environmental factors. These factors prevent woody plants from taking over the habitat.

Perpetual meadows exist in many distinct environments across the globe. Alpine meadows occur at high elevations above the tree line due to harsh climates. Coastal meadows are maintained by salt sprays from the ocean. Desert meadows are restricted by low precipitation or a lack of nutrients and humus. Prairies are maintained by severe droughts or wildfires. There are also wet meadows, which are semi-wetland areas saturated with water for much of the year.

Human history is deeply connected to the development of these landscapes. Agricultural meadows date back to the Iron Age. This was when the invention of proper harvesting tools allowed for efficient hay production. In North America, Native American groups like the Algonquians and Iroquois created transitional meadows. They cleared forest areas through regular burnings to provide food for deer and other game. Today, the purpose of many meadows has shifted from pure agriculture to ecological appreciation. The European Union's Common Agricultural Policy now subsidizes their management, often through grazing.

In modern times, we see a rise in the importance of urban meadows.

Cities are increasingly looking at meadows as potential biodiversity conservation sites. Traditional urban lawns require intensive management and frequent mowing. Switching to urban meadows can promote greater plant and animal diversity. This shift is also seen as a more cost-efficient alternative to classic lawns.

However, urban managers must balance aesthetics and public reaction with economic sustainability and local politics.

Meadows face significant challenges from human activity and a changing climate. In the United Kingdom, hay meadows have declined sharply. Ecologist Professor John Rodwell notes that England and Wales lost about 97% of their hay meadows over the last century. In the UK, only a small fraction of lowland meadows remain, and many are fragmented. Furthermore, climate change alters precipitation and temperature patterns worldwide. This forces many species to move to higher elevations to find suitable habitats.
