Mauritius is an island nation located in the Indian Ocean.

The history of the islands involves many different explorers and rulers. Some historians believe Arab sailors discovered the uninhabited islands around the year 975. They likely called the land Dina Arobi.

Dutch attempts at permanent settlement were difficult and ultimately unsuccessful. They tried to exploit the local ebony forests and produce sugar and arrack. To do this, they used cane cuttings from Java and brought over 300 Malagasy slaves.
Control of the island changed hands again during the Napoleonic Wars. The United Kingdom seized the island from France in 1810. Under the Treaty of Paris, France officially ceded Mauritius to the British. The British colony included Rodrigues, Agaléga, St. Brandon, and the Chagos Archipelago.

Mauritius eventually gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1968. It later became a republic in 1992. The nation's population is incredibly diverse due to its colonial history. Indo-Mauritians form the largest group in the population. There are also significant Creole, Sino-Mauritian, and Franco-Mauritian minorities.

The country is highly regarded for its political and economic stability. The Economist Democracy Index ranks Mauritius as the only full democracy in Africa. It is also known as the most peaceful country on the continent. The government uses a system modeled on the British Westminster parliamentary system. The state also provides free public transportation for students, senior citizens, and the disabled. These social systems help maintain its status as a highly developed economy.
Nature in Mauritius is famous for its unique biodiversity. Many species are endemic, meaning they are found nowhere else on Earth.
