The mountain is made of many different types of rock. Most of it is made of gneiss, which came from the African plate long ago. The shape of the mountain comes from ice and water. Many glaciers flow away from the peak. For example, the Matterhorn Glacier sits at the base of the north face.

Three of these faces—the north, east, and west—are located on the Swiss side. The south face lies on the Italian side. These faces are separated by four distinct ridges: the Hörnli, Furggen, Zmutt, and Leone ridges. The north and south faces are wider than the east and west faces. Furthermore, the east and west faces do not actually meet at the summit. Instead, they are connected by a horizontal ridge that is 100 metres long.

Geologically, the Matterhorn is a complex structure of different rock layers. It is mainly composed of gneisses, which were originally fragments of the African plate. These moved during the Alpine orogeny, a period of mountain building. These gneisses lie over ophiolites and sedimentary rocks from the Penninic nappes. The mountain's sharp shape is the result of cirque erosion. This happens as multiple glaciers diverge from the peak. For instance, the Matterhorn Glacier sits at the base of the north face. Regular avalanches also move snow down the steep walls to feed these glaciers.

Human history is closely tied to the mountain and its surrounding passes.

The Theodul Pass, located at 3,295 metres, is the main passage between the north and south valleys. This route has been used for trade since the Roman era. Some researchers, like T. G. Farinetti, suggested the Latin name Mons Silvius might honor a Roman leader named Servius Galba. In the 18th and 19th centuries, naturalists like Horace-Bénédict de Saussure and artists like John Ruskin studied the peak. The name "Matterhorn" first appeared in print in 1682. It likely comes from the German words "Matte," meaning meadow, and "Horn," meaning horn.

Climbing the Matterhorn has a significant and sometimes tragic history.

For a long time, it remained unclimbed while other Alpine peaks were conquered. In 1865, Edward Whymper led a party from Zermatt to achieve the first ascent.

However, a sudden fall during the descent killed four of the seven climbers. This disaster is said to have marked the end of the golden age of alpinism. The north face was not climbed until 1931, and it is one of the three largest north faces in the Alps. The west face, the highest of the four, was not completely climbed until 1962.

Modern GPS technology used in the TOWER Project determined the precise height in 1999. The summit is now recorded at 4,478 metres above sea level.

When considering peaks with at least 300 metres of prominence, it is the 6th highest in the Alps and Europe outside the Caucasus. Its topographic prominence is 1,818 metres.

Today, the mountain remains a center for tourism and mountaineering.

Since railways were built in the late 19th century, visitor numbers have increased. Many climbers use the Hörnli ridge, which is the most popular route to the summit. Others choose to complete a 10-day circuit around the mountain. The mountain is protected as part of the Swiss Federal Inventory of Natural Monuments. It continues to be a symbol of the Alps for people in Zermatt and Breuil-Cervinia alike.
