Matsushima is a famous archipelago located in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan.

Visitors can experience the scenery through several different methods. Many tourists choose to take a cruise to view the islands from the water. This allows them to see the islands up close. On the shore, people often rent bicycles to travel around the area. There are four specific locations famous for their views of the archipelago. These spots are known as Godaido, Sagakei, Ojima, and Kanrantei.
Literature and poetry have long celebrated the beauty of Matsushima. A well-known haiku describes the islands as being so striking that the poet is at a loss for words. While many people attribute this poem to the famous poet Matsuo Bashō, the history is more complex. The earliest known publication of the poem appeared in the Matsushima Zushi in 1820. This book was published over a century after Bashō died. The text actually credits the kyōka poet Tawara-bō with the poem.
Beyond the islands, the region holds many important cultural properties. These include the Zuigan-ji temple and the Entsū-in. The area also features the Kanrantei and the Satohama shell mound.
There are two main railway stations serving the town. Matsushima-Kaigan Station is located near the waterfront and the Zuigan-ji temple. This makes it convenient for visiting many of the main attractions. Matsushima Station sits on a separate line on the opposite side of the town. This transport system connects the scenic islands to the larger parts of Japan. Travelers can move easily between the urban centers and this natural wonder.
In 2011, the region was affected by the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.
Recovery from the disaster happened steadily throughout the spring of 2011. Electricity was restored to the area by March 18. Water services were fully restored by April 16. The Senseki Train Line, which runs between Takagimachi Station and Sendai, was restored by May 28. Some specific landmarks were lost during the earthquake. For example, the red Togetsukyō Bridge on Ojima was about 20 metres long but was wholly lost.
