On a two-masted ship called a brig, the forward mast is the foremast. On a schooner, the after mast is the mainmast.

Building masts has changed as technology grew. Before the mid-19th century, masts were made of wood. Some were pole masts made from one single tree trunk. Others were made masts built from several pieces of timber. In 1845, the sloop Maria used the first hollow mast. It was built like a barrel with wooden staves and iron hoops. Navigation technology evolved significantly during the Middle Ages. In the Mediterranean, the lateen rig replaced the older square rig. The Byzantine navy used dromons, which were two-masted vessels. These ships featured a foremast and a midships mast. By the 14th century, the mizzen-mast became common on two-masted ships.

Adding a foremast to balance the sail plan followed shortly after. By the 15th century, the three-masted ship design was fully established. This allowed for the great transoceanic voyages of that era.

Engineering has changed how masts are constructed over time. Before the mid-19th century, wood was the primary material. In 1845, the American sloop Maria featured the first hollow mast. This mast was built like a barrel using wooden staves and iron hoops. Later, engineers created hollow masts by gluing two tapered timbers together.
