On February 4, 2004, Zuckerberg launched "Thefacebook" at the website thefacebook.com. He did this with roommates Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes. The idea may have been inspired by a student directory at his former school, Phillips Exeter Academy. This directory was called "The Photo Address Book." Shortly after the launch, three Harvard seniors—Cameron Winklevoss, Tyler Winklevoss, and Divya Narendra—filed a lawsuit. They claimed Zuckerberg misled them to build a competing product called HarvardConnection.com. The legal dispute ended in a settlement involving 1.2 million Facebook shares and $20 million in cash.

Facebook expanded quickly from a "Harvard thing" to a global platform. Zuckerberg and Dustin Moskovitz helped spread the service to many universities, including Stanford and Yale. Zuckerberg eventually dropped out of Harvard to move to Palo Alto, California. There, he worked in a small leased house that served as an office. He stayed in Silicon Valley because it is a major center for computer technology. In the summer of 2004, Peter Thiel invested in the company. By July 21, 2010, Zuckerberg reported that Facebook had reached 500 million users.

Zuckerberg has received many honors for his work in technology. In 2007, he was named one of the top 35 innovators by MIT Technology Review. Vanity Fair named him the number one most influential person in the Information Age in 2010. He has also met with many world leaders, such as Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.
