During the American Civil War, Hanna's responsibilities grew because his father became ill. He could not join the Union Army directly due to these duties. Instead, he hired a substitute to enlist in his place. Hanna served as a second lieutenant in the Perry Light Infantry. This was a regiment of National Guard troops made of Cleveland businessmen. His unit was briefly called into active service in 1864. They were sent to Fort Stevens to help defend Washington, D.C. However, Hanna was not present during the actual combat. He was away on a mission to escort a deceased soldier's body back to Ohio.
