NASA originally planned to use a large rocket called the Atlas-Centaur. However, that rocket had serious development problems. Engineers had to switch to a much smaller rocket called the Agena B. Because the new rocket had less lift, the probe had to be simpler. It could not carry a TV camera like the Soviet Venera probes did. Instead, it carried only the most important tools for its mission.

Mariner 2 launched from Cape Canaveral on August 27, 1962.

Before this flight, Venus was a mystery. Its opaque atmosphere made it impossible to see the surface with telescopes. Scientists wondered if the planet had water or if its surface was incredibly hot. Mariner 2 was built to answer these specific questions about our neighboring planet.

The spacecraft was a simplified design known as the Mariner R.

Engineers created it as a hybrid of the Mariner A plan and the Ranger lunar explorer. The design had to be light because the mission used an Atlas-Agena B rocket. This rocket had only half the lift capacity of the Soviet 8K78 booster. Because of this limited capacity, the probe could not carry a TV camera. Instead, the spacecraft focused on a small set of highly efficient scientific instruments. The main body was a hexagonal bus with two solar panel wings extended for power.

To function in deep space, the probe relied on a complex internal system.

A central computer and sequencer acted as the brain of the craft. It coordinated all activities using a schedule stored in its memory banks. Three gyroscopes helped determine the spacecraft's orientation in space. To keep the probe pointed correctly, a nitrogen gas fueled stabilizing system used ten jet nozzles. For communication, a large high-gain parabolic antenna was mounted on the underside. This antenna stayed pointed toward Earth to transmit data across the vast distance.

The scientific mission relied on several specialized tools to study the environment.

One key instrument was a two-channel microwave radiometer. It used the Dicke mode to chop between a main antenna and a reference horn. This allowed the probe to measure the absolute temperature of the Venusian surface. Another tool was an infrared radiometer that measured radiation in specific spectral ranges. It was designed to detect temperatures between 100 and 1,000 Kelvin. These tools helped scientists study the atmosphere and the surface temperature distribution.

Mariner 2 also carried sensors to study the space between planets. It featured a magnetometer to measure magnetic fields and a solar plasma sensor. These instruments helped map the interplanetary magnetic field and the charged particle environment. En route to Venus, the probe measured the solar wind, which is a constant stream of charged particles from the Sun.

It also detected high-energy particles known as cosmic rays from outside our solar system. Interestingly, the probe found that interplanetary dust was much scarcer than scientists had predicted.

Scientists waited for a launch window when Earth and Venus were in the right positions. This allowed the probe to use a Hohmann Transfer Orbit, which requires the least amount of fuel. Mariner 2 launched from Cape Canaveral on August 27, 1962. It traveled through space and reached its closest point to Venus on December 14, 1962.

The radiometers revealed that Venus has cool clouds but an extremely hot surface. This confirmed that the planet was subject to a runaway greenhouse effect. Scientists had previously suspected high levels of carbon dioxide might cause this. The mission proved that the atmosphere contained at least 500 times more carbon dioxide than Earth. These findings helped scientists understand how atmospheres can trap heat on different worlds. Mariner 2 proved that robotic probes could successfully explore the distant reaches of our solar system.
