He was a striker, which is a player who focuses on scoring goals. People loved watching him because he had amazing ball control and great vision. He was not just strong; he was also very elegant on the ball. This skill allowed him to help his teammates by passing the ball well. He could also score spectacular goals using his head or by hitting volleys. A volley is a shot made while the ball is still in the air.

His way of playing involved many different skills working together. As a centre-forward, he stayed near the goal to score. However, he could also move deeper to help build an attack. He used his large size to hold the ball away from defenders. This helped his teammates move into better positions to help. He was famous for his "impeccable" headers, which means his head shots were nearly perfect. He also had the intelligence to know exactly where to be on the field.

Van Basten began his journey in the Netherlands. He started playing for a local team called EDO when he was six years old. Later, he played for UVV Utrecht and Elinkwijk. Ajax, a very famous club, signed him when he was only 16. He played his first match for them in April 1982. He scored a goal in that very first game against NEC. He went on to score 128 goals in 133 league matches for Ajax.

As a striker, his primary role was to score goals, but his talent extended far beyond simple finishing. He was a complete player who combined physical strength with immense technical skill and elegance. This unique combination allowed him to dominate the penalty area while also participating in the creative build-up of plays. His career was defined by spectacular scoring ability and a high level of attacking intelligence. However, his journey was also marked by a struggle against severe physical injury.

Van Basten's style of play was characterized by several distinct technical abilities. Although he often operated as a traditional centre-forward, he possessed the vision to play as a second striker. This meant he could drop into deeper positions to distribute the ball and provide assists to his teammates.

He was famous for his close ball control and his ability to hold up the ball using his large stature. This allowed him to shield the ball from defenders while waiting for teammates to join the attack. He was also known for impeccable headers and spectacular volleys, which are shots taken while the ball is still in the air. One of his most iconic moments was a volley scored in the Euro 1988 final against the Soviet Union.

His professional journey began in the Netherlands, where he played for local clubs like EDO and UVV Utrecht. Ajax, a major Dutch club, signed him when he was only 16 years old. He made his debut for Ajax in April 1982, scoring a goal in his very first match against NEC. During his time with Ajax, he became a prolific scorer, netting 128 goals in 133 league matches. He led the team to three Eredivisie titles and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. In the 1985–86 season, he scored 37 goals in 26 matches and earned the European Golden Boot.

In 1987, Van Basten moved to the Italian club AC Milan. This move placed him in one of the most competitive leagues in the world, Serie A. At Milan, he joined a legendary group of players that included Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard. His success in Italy was immense, as he won four Serie A titles and two European Cups. He also became the Capocannoniere, which is the award for the top goal scorer in Serie A, multiple times. In the 1991–92 season, his 25 league goals were the highest recorded in a single Serie A season since 1966.

On the international stage, Van Basten was a vital part of the Netherlands national team. His most significant achievement came during the UEFA Euro 1988 tournament. He scored five goals during the competition, including a hat-trick against England in the first round. He also scored the winning goal in the semi-final against West Germany. In the final against the Soviet Union, he scored a spectacular volley from an acute angle to secure the championship. For his performance, he was named the player of the tournament and earned the Golden Boot for being the top scorer.

Despite these triumphs, Van Basten's career was cut short by a recurring and serious ankle injury. He underwent multiple surgeries to try and repair the damage, but the injury continued to return. In 1993, a hard tackle behind him during a Champions League match against Marseille led to his third major ankle surgery. He spent much of the 1993–94 season sidelined and was unable to play in the 1994 World Cup. He finally announced his retirement from professional football on 17 August 1995, at the age of 30.

Van Basten's injury struggles had a lasting impact on the rules of football itself. Many observers argued that a lack of protection from referees and inadequate rules against rugged defending caused his premature retirement. This led to widespread debates about the safety of talented players. Consequently, FIFA eventually outlawed the tackle from behind to prevent similar injuries. This specific rule change is often referred to in the media as the "Van Basten law." His legacy remains significant, as he was ranked among the greatest players of the twentieth century in several international polls.

His greatness is reflected in numerous prestigious awards and rankings. He won the Ballon d'Or, an award for the best player in Europe, three times in 1988, 1989, and 1992. He was also named the FIFA World Player of the Year in 1992. In 1998, he was ranked sixth in the FIFA Player of the Century internet poll. In 2004, the legendary player Pelé included him in the FIFA 100 list of the greatest living players. Even decades after his retirement, he is still cited by experts as one of the most complete attackers to ever play the game.
