Maracay is a major urban center located in north-central Venezuela.

The history of Maracay began in the early 18th century. Bishop Diego de Baños y Sotomayor officially established the city on March 5, 1701. It was built within the valleys of Tocopio and Tapatapa. These valleys are now known as the central valley of Aragua. The origin of the name Maracay is a subject of different theories. One accepted explanation is that it was named after a local indigenous chief. Another theory suggests the name refers to the Maracayo, which is a small tiger.
Maracay underwent a period of rapid expansion during the dictatorship of Juan Vicente Gómez. Gómez ruled Venezuela from 1908 to 1935. He chose Maracay as his place of residence. During his rule, he ordered the construction of several major landmarks. These included an Arc of Triumph and a bull plaza similar to one in Seville, Spain. He also commissioned an Opera house, a Zoo, and the Hotel Jardín. The Hotel Jardín was a majestic tourist attraction known for its very large gardens. The city also contains the Mausoleo de Gómez, where the dictator is buried.
The economy of Maracay is diverse and relies on both industry and agriculture. It functions as a primary industrial and commercial center for the region. The city produces a wide range of goods such as paper, textiles, and chemicals. It also manufactures tobacco, cement, processed foods, soap, and perfumes. Surrounding the city, the land is used for various agricultural activities. Farmers produce sugarcane, tobacco, coffee, and cocoa. Other activities in the region include timber-cutting and cattle-herding.
Maracay is also a vital hub for the Venezuelan military. The city is often called the cradle of Venezuelan aviation. It hosts the two largest Air Force bases in the country. These facilities house F-16 fighter planes and Sukhoi-30MKE aircraft. The military presence also includes the Fourth Armored Division of the Army. Additionally, the 42nd Airborne Brigade has its airborne training center and barracks here. The city is home to the government-owned ammunition and weapons factory, known as CAVIM. This factory produces the Venezuelan version of the FN FAL and AK-103 rifles.
Nature and education are also significant parts of life in Maracay. To the north, the mountains separate the city from the coast. These mountains form the Henri Pittier National Park. The park is a lush rainforest that is famous for its many varieties of ferns.
Transportation infrastructure connects Maracay to much of the country. The Autopista Regional del Centro is a major highway that links the city to other important localities. Maracay also has access to the small national railway system. For air travel, the city has two distinct facilities. There is the Mariscal Sucre Airport and the El Libertador military Air Base. The latter is located on the shore of the Lago de Valencia. While the city currently lacks a subway system, a subway is in the planning stages.
