This bay is very long and wide. Near the city, four rivers converge: the Tembe, Mbuluzi, Matola, and Infulene. Maputo is close to the borders of South Africa and Eswatini. The city is organized into seven administrative divisions. Each division is further subdivided into quarters, known as bairros.

Although it is surrounded by Maputo Province, the city has been a separate province since 1998. It is the smallest and most densely populated province in Mozambique.

As a major port city, Maputo's economy is centered on commerce. The harbor is vital for the nation's trade. Many imports and exports are shipped through this port. The city exports various goods like cotton, sugar, and hardwood. It also ships chromite, sisal, and copra. Beyond maritime trade, the city has strong manufacturing and service sectors. This economic activity supports a large population. In 2017, the city had 1,088,449 residents. The larger Maputo metropolitan area, which includes the neighboring city of Matola, has 2,717,437 people.

The history of Maputo began with the ancient Tsonga people. They first settled the area as a fishing village. In 1544, a navigator named Lourenço Marques explored the region.

Later, the Portuguese established a fort on the site in 1781. A town grew around this fort starting around 1850. In 1877, the settlement was elevated to city status. In 1898, the capital of Portuguese Mozambique was moved here. The city grew rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This growth was driven by its role as a seaport. The opening of the NZASM railroad to Pretoria in 1895 helped increase the population. The Witwatersrand Gold Rush also boosted economic development.

Maputo has undergone significant political changes. In 1975, Mozambique gained independence from Portuguese rule. The city then became the national capital. At that time, it was renamed Maputo.

The name likely comes from the Maputo River. This river marks the border with South Africa. During the Mozambican Civil War, the city's economy suffered greatly. After the war ended, the FRELIMO government worked to revive the economy. They also launched programs to clean up the city. This included the removal of squatters and undocumented residents.

January is the hottest month, while July is the coolest. However, the city faces risks from climate change. It is vulnerable to cyclones and flooding from rising sea levels.
