Manuel I Komnenos was a Byzantine emperor who ruled during the 12th century. His reign occurred during a vital turning point for the Byzantine Empire. This period was known as the Komnenian restoration. During this time, the empire saw a resurgence of economic and military power. It also experienced a major cultural revival. Manuel was an ambitious leader who wanted to restore the empire to its former glory. He aimed to make Byzantium the greatest power in the Mediterranean world.

Manuel was born on November 28, 1118, in the Purple Chamber of the Great Palace of Constantinople. Because of his birth location, he was called Porphyrogenitus, which means "born in the purple." He was the eighth child of Emperor John II Komnenos and Irene of Hungary. Manuel did not receive a formal education in books. Instead, he was trained specifically to be a soldier. He accompanied his father on military expeditions against the Anatolian Turks. During the Siege of Neocaesarea in 1140, Manuel led a successful counterattack. This display of courage impressed his father greatly.

When John II died on April 8, 1143, Manuel became the emperor. His father had chosen him over his older brother, Isaac. John believed Manuel was more ready to take advice and more courageous. To secure his power in Constantinople, Manuel had to act quickly. He sent a high official named John Axouch to arrest his brother Isaac. Manuel also promised 200 silver pieces annually to the clergy of Hagia Sophia to gain their support. After entering the capital in mid-August 1143, he was crowned by Patriarch Michael II Kourkouas. He even gave two golden pieces to every household in the city to celebrate.

Manuel's foreign policy was very active and complex. He worked to establish a Byzantine protectorate over the Crusader states of Outremer. This meant he exerted control over regions like the Principality of Antioch. He also formed alliances with the West, including Pope Adrian IV. In 1146, he received a letter from King Louis VII of France regarding the Second Crusade. Manuel agreed to supply the Crusaders, but he demanded they pay for supplies. He also required them to swear fealty to him while crossing his lands. This was a difficult task because some Crusader groups were not disciplined.

Relations with Western travelers were often tense. The German Crusader army, led by Conrad III, caused trouble in Byzantine lands. Some German forces even killed and pillaged as they entered. Manuel had to manage these conflicts carefully to protect his empire. He also faced threats from the sea. Roger II of Sicily launched a fleet that captured the island of Corfu. To fight this, Manuel formed an alliance with the Germans and the Venetians. This alliance helped him recover Corfu and defend his territory.

In the east, Manuel campaigned aggressively against the Turks. In 1146, he led an army against Masud, the Sultan of Rûm. This expedition involved battles at Akroinon and the destruction of Philomelion. However, the campaign faced many challenges. Manuel was once lured away from his main army during an ambush near Ikonion. Later in his reign, he suffered a major defeat at Myriokephalon. This happened because he attacked a well-defended Seljuk position. While he eventually made peace with Sultan Kilij Arslan II, the defeat stopped the empire from recovering the interior of Anatolia.

Historians view Manuel's legacy in different ways. His secretary, John Kinnamos, wrote a history that portrayed Manuel as a perfect hero. In parts of the Latin West, he was called "the most blessed emperor of Constantinople." However, some historians argue his power came from the strength of the Komnenos dynasty rather than his own actions. They also note that Byzantine power declined sharply after his death in 1180. Despite these debates, Manuel remains a central figure in Mediterranean history. He reshaped the political maps of the Balkans and the eastern Mediterranean.
