*Mantella* species exhibit a fascinating biological phenomenon called convergent evolution. This occurs when different species independently evolve similar traits because they live in similar ways. The *Mantella* genus is very similar in size, appearance, and behavior to the Dendrobatidae family from Latin America. For example, the golden mantella (*Mantella aurantiaca*) looks very much like the golden poison frog (*Phyllobates terribilis*). Even Cowan's mantella (*Mantella cowanii*) shares a similar color pattern with the Harlequin poison frog (*Oophaga histrionica*). Despite these similarities, they are distinct lineages that arrived at the same survival strategies.

The scientific classification of these frogs has a long history of debate. Between 1866 and 1872, Alfred Grandidier described the first specimens. He initially placed them in the genus *Dendrobates* because they looked so much like American poison frogs. This classification was not settled until 1882. That year, George Albert Boulenger established the genus *Mantella*. He described *Mantella cowanii* and later *Mantella baroni*. The species *M. baroni* was named after Reverend Richard Baron. Some species are highly adaptable. For instance, *Mantella ebenaui* and *Mantella betsileo* can live in human-disturbed areas. *M. ebenaui* has been spotted in garbage dumps feeding on flies. However, many species face serious threats. Habitat loss from farming, mining, and charcoal production is a major problem. Over-collection for the international pet trade also puts many populations at risk. Because of these factors, many species are listed as endangered or critically endangered on the IUCN Red List.
