This makes them highly vulnerable to human threats. They face pollution, entanglement in fishing nets, and direct harvesting. Specifically, their gill rakers are highly valued and traded internationally for use in Chinese medicine.

Because of these pressures, M. birostris and M. alfredi are both listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Manta rays are deeply connected to the health of marine ecosystems. They serve as important components of the pelagic food web. Their presence is often a draw for tourism, as many people enjoy watching them in the wild. However, they are more vulnerable to threats when they are close to the shore. While they are protected in international waters by the Convention on Migratory Species of Wild Animals, local protection remains a critical concern for their survival.
