The reservoir is part of a complex landscape that includes the Manicouagan Regional County Municipality and parts of the Caniapiscau Regional County Municipality. Because of its distinct circular shape, the feature is often called the "eye of Quebec" by those who view it from space. The reservoir covers a vast area and holds a significant volume of water.

This unique shape is the result of a massive impact structure. Millions of years ago, a large asteroid struck the Earth. This asteroid was approximately 10 kilometers in diameter. The collision excavated a massive crater that was originally much wider than the feature seen today. Over time, erosion and the deposition of sediments reduced the visible diameter. The current structure is a multiple-ring crater, about 80 kilometers across. The reservoir itself sits within the most prominent inner ring of this ancient site.

At the center of the ring lies René-Levasseur Island. This island acts as a plateau within the crater. The highest point on the island is Mount Babel, which rises above both the reservoir level and sea level. The central portion of this island is protected as the Louis-Babel Ecological Reserve. On the eastern shore of the island, you can find a large bay named Memory Bay. This central peak, Mount Babel, is interpreted by scientists as the result of post-impact uplift. This means the ground pushed upward after the asteroid hit.

Scientists have used radiometric dating to determine the age of this impact. Radiometric dating is a method used to find the age of rocks by measuring radioactive decay. One study from 1992 estimated the impact melt was 214 million years old. A later estimate placed the age at 215.4 million years. This occurred during the Late Triassic period. This timing is important because it shows the impact happened more than 12 million years before the Triassic–Jurassic extinction event. Therefore, the Manicouagan impact did not cause that specific mass extinction.

Despite that, the impact had widespread effects on our planet. An ejecta blanket of shocked quartz was found in rock layers as far away as England and Japan. Ejecta is the material thrown out during an impact. Some researchers believe the event may be linked to other biological changes. It has been suggested that the impact might have caused a marine extinction during the Norian period. This could have affected creatures like radiolarians, sponges, conodonts, and ammonoids. While some think it caused a gradual decline in these groups, direct evidence is still being studied.

Today, the reservoir serves a very practical purpose through a hydroelectric project. In the 1960s, the provincial utility Hydro-Québec created the reservoir. They built the Daniel-Johnson dam to flood two older lakes: Lake Mushalagan and a smaller Manicouagan.

This was part of the Manic-Outardes Project. The reservoir now acts as a giant headpond for the Manicouagan River. It provides water to several generating stations, including Manic-2, Manic-3, and the Daniel-Johnson Dam (Manic-5).

The water levels in the reservoir actually fluctuate based on human needs. During the peak of winter, the water level is usually lower. This is because the turbines run constantly to meet the high demand for electrical heating in Quebec. In the summer, levels may change again during extreme heat in New England. During these times, Hydro-Québec sells electrical energy to the joint New England grid in the United States.
