This struggle happens between two different worlds. One world is a good spiritual world made of light. The other is an evil material world made of darkness. Followers believe that light is slowly being removed from the dark world. This light is then returned to a holy, divine place. It is a way of seeing how the universe works over time.

To live this faith, people followed many special traditions.

They practiced things like praying and fasting. They also gave money or food to help the poor. In their communities, people gathered to sing hymns together. They also practiced confession to stay close to their beliefs. These rituals helped them focus on the importance of light. The religion also encouraged people to share their message with others. This helped the faith grow very quickly in many different lands.

An Iranian prophet named Mani started this religion in the third century.

At its height, it reached from Roman Iberia in the west to China in the east. It was even the official religion for the Uyghur Khaganate. In the seventh century, it traveled to Tang China through trade. However, the religion faced many hard times and persecution. In Roman lands, it mostly disappeared by the end of the sixth century. In China, it eventually blended into Buddhism and Taoism.

Many different ideas helped shape what Mani taught.

Manichaeism was a major world religion founded in the third century CE.

It was a belief system based on an elaborate dualistic cosmology. This means it described a fundamental struggle between two opposing forces. One force was a good spiritual world made of light. The other was an evil material world made of darkness. Through an ongoing process in history, light is gradually removed from matter. This light is then returned to the divine world. This core idea shaped how followers understood the purpose of existence.

To practice this faith, followers engaged in specific sacramental rites.

These included regular prayers, fasting, and the act of almsgiving. Communal life was very important to the followers. They centered their community activities on confession and the singing of hymns. The religion also placed a heavy emphasis on active proselytism. This means they worked hard to share their message with new people. Because of this, the faith spread very quickly through many different regions.

Manichaeism was a highly syncretic religion. This means it sought to integrate many different ideas. Mani intended his teachings to succeed and surpass prior belief systems. He included elements from Platonism, Christianity, and Zoroastrianism. He also drew from Buddhism, Gnosticism, and various Mesopotamian religions. Some followers even viewed Mani as the final prophet. They saw him as following figures like the Buddha and Jesus. This made the religion a complex mix of many ancient traditions.

The religion was founded by the Iranian prophet Mani.

Mani was born in 216 CE near Ctesiphon. At that time, this area was part of the Parthian Empire. His parents were members of the Elcesaites, a Gnostic sect. Mani claimed to receive revelations from a spirit. He called this spirit his "Twin" or his "Protective Angel."

He wrote seven works to share his message. Six of these were written in the Syriac language. He also created a unique Manichaean alphabet for his writings.

Mani's life was marked by both support and struggle. He initially had the backing of the Sasanian Empire. He even presented his work, the Shabuhragan, to Emperor Shapur I. However, he later faced disapproval from the Zoroastrian clergy. Mani was eventually imprisoned and died around 276 or 277 CE.

Despite his death, the religion became one of the most widespread in the world. It thrived between the third and seventh centuries CE. At its height, it reached from Roman Iberia to China.

The religion faced many different challenges in different lands.

In the West, it was persecuted by the Roman state and the early Christian church. It mostly disappeared from Roman lands by the end of the sixth century. In the East, however, Manichaeism survived and expanded. It was the official religion of the Uyghur Khaganate until 830. It also saw a resurgence during the Mongol Yuan dynasty in the 13th and 14th centuries. Eventually, in China, it was subsumed into Buddhism and Taoism.

Manichaeism connects to many other historical movements and ideas.

Some historians believe it influenced later European movements. These include Paulicianism, Bogomilism, and Catharism. While most original writings were lost, many fragments have survived. We have found these through discoveries like the Dead Sea Scrolls. These texts help us understand how Mani's "religion of light" shaped history. Even today, scholars study these pieces to learn about this lost world.
