Different models offered vastly different levels of power and range. A small Whirlwind model might throw a projectile weighing only 50 kilograms. In contrast, a large Four-footed model with a seven-arm component could launch a 250-kilogram weight. These machines were incredibly numerous during major conflicts. For instance, during the siege of Kaifeng in 1126, the Jurchen Jin dynasty used 5,000 mangonels. During the Battle of Caishi in 1161, Song dynasty soldiers used them to fire bombs made of lime and sulphur. These specific numbers show how central these machines were to large-scale military operations.
By the 6th century A.D., the traction trebuchet spread from China to the Mediterranean. It was adopted by many different groups, including the Byzantines, Persians, and Arabs. Some historians believe the Avars helped carry this technology westward across Eurasia. The mangonel quickly replaced older siege engines like the onager and the ballista. The onager was a torsion-powered machine that used twisted fibers or sinews for energy. These twisted cords were dangerous because they could fail catastrophically during use. The mangonel was a safer, simpler, and faster alternative for soldiers to operate.

This change improved accuracy and the rate of fire for attacking armies. The arrival of the mangonel in the eastern Mediterranean changed the nature of sieges forever. It allowed for a more reliable way to break through defenses and destroy fortifications. Even as more advanced counterweight trebuchets appeared in the 12th and 13th centuries, the mangonel remained a significant invention in the history of engineering.
