Mandrake the Magician is a long-running syndicated newspaper comic strip.
Beyond hypnosis, Mandrake possesses several other magical abilities. He can become invisible, shapeshift, levitate, and teleport. Much of this power comes from his magical hat, cloak, and wand. These items were passed down to him by his father, Theron. Over time, Mandrake learns how to manipulate these enchanted objects. He lives in a high-tech mansion called Xanadu, located atop a mountain in New York State. This home features advanced technology, such as closed-circuit television and vertical iron gates. It even includes a sectional road that can divide in half.
Mandrake is rarely alone in his adventures. His closest companion is Lothar, who is often called the strongest man in the world. Lothar met Mandrake during travels in Africa and chose to follow him rather than becoming a king. Lothar is incredibly powerful; he can lift an elephant with one hand. He is also impervious to heat, cold, and man-made weapons. Furthermore, he cannot be directly harmed by magical attacks like fire bolts. Another key figure is Hojo, Mandrake's chef at Xanadu. Hojo is actually the secret chief of an international crimefighting organization called Inter-Intel.
The history of the comic strip is marked by several important creators. Lee Falk wrote the scripts for many decades. Phil Davis served as the primary illustrator until his death in 1964. After Davis, Fred Fredericks took over the artwork. Following Falk's death in 1999, Fredericks assumed both the roles of writer and artist. The Sunday newspaper strips concluded on December 29, 2002. The daily strips continued until July 6, 2013, when Fredericks retired. Interestingly, the real-life magician Leon Mandrake shared a similar appearance with the character. Leon even changed his stage name to match the popular comic strip.
The strip features a wide variety of complex villains. The Cobra is Mandrake's most dangerous and evil enemy. The Cobra seeks to steal powerful Crystal Cubes that can increase mental energy. It was later revealed that The Cobra is actually Luciphor, the half-brother of Mandrake and Theron. Another villain is the Clay Camel, known as Saki, who is a master of disguise. He can mimic anyone and change his appearance in seconds. There is also Ekardnam, an "evil twin" who lives on the other side of a mirror. His name is simply Mandrake spelled backward, and he uses an "evil eye" for magic.

Today, Mandrake remains connected to the broader world of legendary comic characters. In 2013, the Dynamite Entertainment series *Kings Watch* brought Mandrake together with other famous heroes. He teamed up with The Phantom, Flash Gordon, and Dale Arden to fight the Cobra and Ming the Merciless. This crossover demonstrates how Mandrake fits into a larger system of heroic legends. Even after decades of publication, his stories continue to find new readers through these modern connections and reprints.
