Mandaue has a deep history involving many different cultures. An Austronesian group first established a community in the area. The Venetian chronicler Antonio Pigafetta recorded a settlement called "Mandaui." He noted a chieftain named Apanoaan lived there. Later, Spanish authorities reorganized the natives into a town. This area served as a mission village for the church. It was managed by Jesuits in 1638 and Recollects a century later. By 1818, the town included 2,729 native families and 20 Spanish-Filipino families.

The town faced significant changes during the early 20th century. The Philippine Revolution of 1898 introduced a new administration. However, American troops soon overthrew the revolution. A battle in 1901 nearly destroyed the town. This conflict resulted in the death of Presidente Benito Ceniza. Following this, Mandaue finally achieved its goal of independence. It was formally established as an independent municipality in 1901. The city eventually became a chartered city on August 30, 1969. It gained recognition as a highly urbanized city in 1991.
