Speaking Mandarin can sound very different depending on where you are. Many versions are not mutually intelligible. This means people speaking different dialects might not understand each other. For example, some Southwest varieties differ from the Beijing dialect. Most Mandarin varieties use four tones to change meanings. Some versions also use special sounds called retroflex consonants. These are sounds made with the tongue curled back. These sounds are common in Beijing but lost in southern China.

Mandarin has a very long and important history. A common way of speaking grew in the North China Plain. This happened during the Jin and Yuan dynasties. This older version is called Old Mandarin. It helped people write new kinds of stories. They wrote poems called sanqu and plays called qu. A book called the Zhongyuan Yinyun was made in 1324. This dictionary helped record how people spoke back then.

For a long time, officials used a special common speech. They called it Guānhuà. This helped government workers from different places talk to each other. In the 1700s, the Yongzheng Emperor even asked for better teaching of pronunciation. Later, the Beijing dialect became the most important way to speak. In the early 1900s, a standard language was chosen. This new standard was based on the Beijing dialect. It included parts from other Mandarin varieties too.

Mandarin varieties function through complex linguistic mechanisms. Most varieties use a system of four tones. These tones change the meaning of words. Many varieties also use retroflex initial consonants. These are sounds made by curling the tongue back. These sounds are often lost in southern Chinese varieties. In many Mandarin varieties, the final stops of Middle Chinese have disappeared. Some varieties instead use a final glottal stop to merge these sounds.

Linguists categorize Mandarin into several distinct subgroups. The Language Atlas of China identifies several major groups. These include varieties from the Southwest and the Lower Yangtze. Many of these are not mutually intelligible with the Beijing dialect. Some speakers may not realize their speech is part of the Mandarin group. They often identify by regional names like the Sichuan or Hebei dialects. The Jin group is also considered a distinct branch.

The history of Mandarin began with regional variants of Old and Middle Chinese. A common form of speech developed in the North China Plain. This occurred during the Jin and Yuan dynasties. Linguists call this version Old Mandarin. It supported new types of vernacular literature. People wrote verse and drama known as qu and sanqu. A rime dictionary called the Zhongyuan Yinyun was created in 1324.

For centuries, a common speech called Guānhuà served as a lingua franca. This language allowed government officials to communicate. It was used by courts starting at least in the 14th century. The language was often based on dialects from the Nanjing area. In 1728, the Yongzheng Emperor issued a decree about pronunciation. He wanted officials to learn proper speech. This led to the creation of textbooks for correct pronunciation.

Eventually, the Beijing dialect became the dominant influence.

Standard Chinese emerged as a formal national language in the early 20th century. It is based on the Beijing dialect. However, it includes lexical and syntactic elements from other Mandarin varieties. This standard language replaced Literary Chinese as the written standard. Intellectuals like Hu Shih campaigned for this change. This shift helped literature better reflect how people actually spoke. Today, Standard Chinese is highly prestigious. It serves as the official language of China and Taiwan.
