Many different kinds of people wrote these beautiful poems.
Historians believe the collection was put together after the year 759.
Nature plays a very big role in these ancient verses.
The Man'yōshū is the oldest surviving collection of Japanese poetry.
The collection is organized into 20 distinct books.
Authors of the Man'yōshū came from many different social classes. You can find verses written by the Emperor and high aristocrats. Junior officials and soldiers also contributed their poetry. Even street performers and peasants left their marks on the collection. This diversity is rare for such an ancient work. Interestingly, more than 2,100 poems have unknown authors. The collection also preserves the names of several earlier, lost anthologies. These include the Kinchū and various family collections like those of Kakimoto no Hitomaro.
Scholars debate the exact meaning of the title, Man'yōshū. The kanji can be translated as "ten thousand leaves collection."
The history of the collection is divided into four distinct periods. The first period reaches back to legendary figures like Emperor Yūryaku. The second period covers the late 7th century. This era was defined by Kakinomoto no Hitomaro, a legendary poet. The third period spans from 700 to 729. This time featured poets like Yamabe no Akahito and Yamanoue no Okura. The fourth period lasts from 730 to 759. This final era was dominated by the compiler, Ōtomo no Yakamochi. He wrote the very last dated poem in the collection in 759.
Linguistically, the Man'yōshū is incredibly significant. It uses an early writing system called Man'yōgana.
Nature is deeply woven into the fabric of these poems. The verses mention more than 150 species of grasses and trees.
