Many factors influence how dangerous a mamba bite is to a person. Severity depends on the snake's temperament and the amount of venom it yields. The depth of the puncture and how close the wound is to the central nervous system also matter. The black mamba often has the worst prognosis for victims. This may be because it is larger and more defensive than other species. Its terrestrial nature also means it has more potential for contact with humans. In untreated cases, the black mamba is extremely dangerous, but antivenom is available to treat envenomation.
