The Majapahit empire was a powerful Hindu-Buddhist land in Southeast Asia. It was based on the island of Java in modern-day Indonesia. This empire was a thalassocracy, which means it gained strength through the sea. At its largest, it covered much of the Nusantara archipelago. This area stretched across parts of Asia and Oceania. Many historians see it as a model for the modern borders of Indonesia.

The name Majapahit comes from a type of fruit. This fruit grows near the capital and has a very bitter taste. Legend says that workers clearing a forest found these trees. They ate the fruit and named the new village after it. While the name originally meant the capital city, people now use it for the whole empire. The empire was also known by other names in Sanskrit.

Eventually, the empire began to decline. A civil war made it much harder to control its many states. The empire finally collapsed in 1527 after an invasion by the Sultanate of Demak. The name Majapahit is linked to a specific type of fruit. This fruit is known for having a very bitter taste. According to a 16th-century chronicle, the name comes from a legend about a new settlement. Raden Wijaya, a leader, established a settlement in the Trik forest in 1292. The workers who cleared the forest encountered these trees and ate the bitter fruit. They named the village Majapahit after the fruit. While the name technically referred to the capital city, it is now used for the whole empire.

The empire's origins are tied to a major conflict involving the Mongol Empire. In 1293, the Mongol-led Yuan dynasty sent a massive expedition to Java. This force included 30,000 soldiers and 1,000 ships. They were sent by Emperor Kublai Khan as a punitive expedition. Raden Wijaya used this invasion to his advantage. He first allied with the Yuan army to defeat a local ruler named Jayakatwang. Once Jayakatwang was defeated, Wijaya launched a surprise attack against his former Mongol allies. The Yuan forces were forced to withdraw from the hostile territory.

Raden Wijaya became the first king, known by the regnal name Kertarajasa Jayawardhana. His early reign faced many challenges from internal rebellions. His successor, Jayanegara, also dealt with chaotic periods and several uprisings. One dangerous revolt, the Kuti rebellion, even saw rebels take control of the capital. During this time, a leader named Gajah Mada helped the king escape. Gajah Mada would later become a vital figure in the empire's history.

Majapahit reached its golden age during the mid-14th century. This peak occurred during the reigns of Queen Tribhuvana and her son, Hayam Wuruk. The famous prime minister Gajah Mada played a major role in this era of expansion. A text called the Nagarakṛtāgama, written in 1365, describes the empire's vast reach. It claims Majapahit had 98 tributary states. These territories stretched from Sumatra to New Guinea. This included parts of modern Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Thailand, Timor Leste, and the Philippines.

Historians use several types of evidence to reconstruct this history. Archaeological excavations in the Trowulan area have uncovered many ruins. These include temples and an extensive network of canals. Satellite imagery has helped reveal how large the capital city actually was. Researchers also study Old Javanese inscriptions carved on stone and metal. These inscriptions provide data on dynasties, economics, and the arts. Additionally, palm-leaf manuscripts like the Deśavarṇana and the Pararaton offer narrative accounts.

External records also provide important details about Majapahit culture. Chinese historical sources from the Yuan and Ming dynasties offer valuable perspectives. For example, the explorer Zheng He visited Majapahit between 1405 and 1432. His translator, Ma Huan, wrote a detailed report called the Yingya Shenglan. This document describes the customs and social life of the people in Java. These foreign accounts help verify many of the events described in local Javanese chronicles.

The empire eventually entered a period of slow decline. A civil war weakened the central government's control over its many vassal states. This loss of authority made the empire vulnerable to outside forces. In 1527, the empire collapsed following an invasion by the Sultanate of Demak. This event marked a major shift in the region. The fall of Majapahit led to the rise of various Islamic kingdoms across Java.
