The Comanche people used the wood for bows as well. They liked it because it was strong, flexible, and durable. The wood is heavy and hard, with a specific gravity of 0.7736. 
American settlers also used the tree for practical purposes. They planted the trees as hedges to protect gardens and corn fields. By pruning the trees severely, they encouraged many adventitious shoots to grow from the base. These shoots became interwoven to form a dense, thorny barrier. These hedges were "horse-high, bull-strong, and pig-tight." This method of fencing was used until barbed wire was invented in 1874. The wood remains a great source for fence posts today.
The Osage orange also plays a role in larger environmental systems. In 1934, it was part of the Great Plains Shelterbelt project. This was an ambitious plan by the WPA to prevent soil erosion. By 1942, the project included 220 million trees in 30,233 shelterbelts. These trees help modify weather and protect the soil in prairie states. The tree is remarkably resistant to many insect predators and fungal diseases. It continues to be a significant part of the landscape in the United States and Canada.
