Macedonia is a large geographic and administrative region in Greece.
The history of this land begins in the very distant past.

The name 'Macedonia' has undergone many changes over time. In the ancient era, it referred to the kingdom of the Makednoi tribe. This tribe may have migrated from Histiaeotis. The name likely comes from the word *makednos*, meaning 'tall' or 'slim'. During the Roman and Byzantine empires, the name applied to various administrative areas. However, the name mostly disappeared during Ottoman rule. The Ottomans did not use Macedonia as an administrative unit. For several centuries, the name was rarely seen on maps. The people living there were often peasants. They spoke Greek, Vlach, or various Slavonic languages. Most people identified by their religion rather than ethnicity.
In the 19th century, the name Macedonia was revived.
Today, the region is divided into several administrative parts. In 1987, the large region was split into smaller divisions. These include Western Macedonia and Central Macedonia. The eastern part was previously organized into the Drama-Kavala-Xanthi Super-prefecture. The region also includes the autonomous monastic community of Mount Athos. This community is unique in its governance. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs handles its political aspects. The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople handles its religious aspects. This structure shows how ancient traditions still influence modern administration.
Macedonia remains a vital economic center for Greece. It produces the majority of the country's agricultural goods. The region also contributes greatly to industry and tourism.
