There are eleven stories in the whole collection. The most famous part is called the Four Branches of the Mabinogi. These four stories are closely linked together by their characters. A character named Pryderi appears in all four of these tales. The stories follow his life and the lives of his family. Other stories in the group are quite different from these four. For example, "Culhwch and Olwen" is a classic hero quest. The story "Lludd and Llefelys" is a historic legend.

{ "text": "The Mabinogion is a famous collection of the earliest Welsh prose stories. These tales were compiled in Middle Welsh during the 12th and 13th centuries. They grew from much older oral traditions, meaning they were told out loud by narrators for a long time. The collection is important because it offers a window into early Welsh culture, language, and mythology. The stories are diverse, covering many different moods and styles. They include drama, philosophy, romance, tragedy, fantasy, and humor. \n\nWhile the collection contains eleven stories, they are not all the same. The most central part is a sequence called the Four Branches of the Mabinogi. These four tales are tightly organized and likely written by a single author. They are linked by characters, specifically a figure named Pryderi, who appears in all four. The other seven stories are much more varied. For example, \"Culhwch and Olwen\" is a classic hero quest. \"Lludd and Llefelys\" is a historic legend. Some stories even present a very different version of King Arthur than the popular versions we know today.\n\nTo understand the structure, one must look at the Four Branches. The first, \"Pwyll Pendefig Dyfed,\" tells of Pryderi's parents and his birth. The second, \"Branwen ferch Llŷr,\" focuses on Branwen's marriage to the King of Ireland. The third, \"Manawydan fab Llŷr,\" follows Pryderi and Manawydan as they face misfortunes. The fourth, \"Math fab Mathonwy,\" involves a conflict between Math and Gwydion. These branches are distinct from the native tales, such as \"The Dream of Rhonabwy\" or \"Hanes Taliesin.\"

\n\nThe history of these texts is a subject of much scholarly debate. Most experts agree the stories were written in the late 11th and 12th centuries. This date range is often cited as 1050 to 1225. Some scholars, like Ifor Williams, suggested
