They led from 24 June 1857 until late that year.

Jerez eventually helped lead the nation through a unique system of shared power. On 23 January 1857, he formed a dual Junta government. A Junta is a group of people that governs a country. He joined with Tomás Martínez, who was a leader of the Conservative Party. They acted jointly as the Presidents of Nicaragua for several months. This shared leadership lasted from 24 June 1857 until late in the year. Specifically, they served until 19 October or 15 November 1857.

After his time as president, Jerez served as a diplomat. He held the title of Minister Plenipotentiary to Costa Rica. A Minister Plenipotentiary is a diplomat with full power to represent their government. On 15 April 1858, he signed a very important document called the Cañas–Jerez Treaty. This treaty was used to define the boundaries between Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Setting clear borders is essential for peace between neighboring countries.
