Names for the city have changed over time. It was once just called Gladbach. In 1888, it became Mönchengladbach to show it was near a monk's abbey. This helped people tell it apart from another town. Between 1933 and 1950, the spelling was slightly different. In 1950, the name was changed again to avoid confusion with the city of Munich.

Today, the city is organized into four boroughs. These boroughs are further divided into 44 individual districts. This structure helps manage the various parts of the growing urban area.

The history of this region goes back hundreds of thousands of years. Remains of Homo erectus and Neanderthals show that people lived here 300,000 to 400,000 years ago. Later, people from the Neolithic and Bronze Ages left behind many cairns. The specific town of Mönchengladbach began with the founding of an abbey in the year 974. This abbey was established by Gero, the Archbishop of Cologne, and a monk named Sandrad of Trier. The town was named after the Gladbach, which is a narrow brook. Most of this brook runs underground today.

As the settlement grew, its name changed to avoid confusion. The original name was simply Gladbach. In 1888, the name became Mönchengladbach to refer to the "Monks' Gladbach" near the abbey. This distinguished it from another town named Gladbach. Between 1933 and 1950, the spelling was written without a hyphen. However, this was changed in 1950 to avoid confusion with the city of Munich.

In the 14th century, the abbey and nearby villages officially became a town. This town received its charter between 1364 and 1366.

The city has faced many political shifts over the centuries. In 1794, French revolutionary forces marched into the town. Following the Treaty of Lunéville in 1801, the area fell under French laws. This led to the closure of the monastery, and by 1802, the last 31 monks left. In 1815, the city became part of the Kingdom of Prussia. During World War II, the city was bombed by the Royal Air Force on May 11, 1940. The bombers targeted railyards to stop German troop movements. After the war, the Prussian Rhine Province was dissolved. Mönchengladbach then became part of the new state of North Rhine-Westphalia in 1946.

Economic life in Mönchengladbach has undergone a massive structural change. From the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century, the textile industry was the most important sector. This included making cloth and clothing. Today, the textile and clothing industry employs only 7 percent of the workforce. The city has diversified into many new areas. These include mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, logistics, the creative industry, and the health sector.

Transportation connects Mönchengladbach to the rest of Europe. The city has two main railway stations: Mönchengladbach Hauptbahnhof and Rheydt Hauptbahnhof. This is unique because the name of the old Rheydt station was never removed after the cities merged. The Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn connects the city to Düsseldorf and Hagen. Regional trains also run to Venlo in the Netherlands. While the Mönchengladbach Airport handles general aviation and business charters, it does not have scheduled passenger services. The large Düsseldorf Airport is located only 20 kilometers to the east.
