The history of the area begins much earlier than the modern city. Evidence shows people settled in this region as early as the 6th century AD.
The modern city of Lusaka began in 1905. At that time, the land was part of a British protectorate called Northern Rhodesia.
In 1929, the British colonial administration decided to move the capital. They moved it from Livingstone to a more central location. They chose Lusaka because of its position on the railway and the major roads. Town planners like Stanley Adshead were brought in to design the city. Adshead wanted a large footprint to allow the city to expand inward. He originally wanted the city to be just an administrative center. However, later plans by a planner named Bowling included areas for industry and business. This helped the city grow into a more complex urban center.
Lusaka has seen many changes in its political status. In 1953, it lost some status when Salisbury became the capital of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland.

Today, Lusaka is a massive center for education, law, and travel. It hosts the Supreme Court of Zambia and major institutions like the University of Zambia.
