The brightest star is Alpha Lupi, which has the proper name Uridim. This name was assigned on September 12, 2024, based on the Babylonian UR.IDIM. Alpha Lupi is an ageing blue giant star of spectral type B1.5 III. It is located approximately 460 light-years from Earth.

This star is also a Beta Cephei variable. This means it pulsates in brightness by 0.03 of a magnitude every 7 hours and 6 minutes.

Deep-sky objects provide much more to explore within this region. The constellation hosts several globular clusters, including NGC 5824 and NGC 5986. To the south, you can find the open clusters NGC 5822 and NGC 5749. The western border contains the Wolf–Rayet planetary nebula known as IC 4406. This is also called the Retina Nebula. It is a cylindrical nebula located 5,000 light-years away.

It contains some of the hottest stars in existence and features dust lanes in its center. Another planetary nebula, NGC 5882, sits toward the center of the constellation.

Lupus has also been the site of incredible cosmic events. In the year 1006, a massive supernova known as SN 1006 occurred here. This explosion was recorded between April 30 and May 1, 1006. It is described as the brightest stellar event in recorded history.

Beyond stars and nebulae, the constellation also contains distant galaxies. The spiral galaxy ESO 274-1 can be seen edge-on. It requires an amateur telescope with at least 12 inches of aperture to view. This galaxy is 9 arcminutes by 0.7 arcminutes and has a small, elliptical nucleus. Finally, the transiting exoplanet Lupus-TR-3b is also located within this constellation.
