Learning in this area has a very long history. A school for training clergy was built way back in 1085. In 1425, a medieval university called a studium generale was founded. This was the oldest place for higher education in Scandinavia. Later, Sweden won the Scania region from Denmark in 1658. The Swedish Crown then officially founded the university in 1666. At first, it was known by the name Academia Carolina. It started with four main areas: Law, Theology, Medicine, and Philosophy.

Over the years, the university changed and grew in many ways. In the early days, there were only about 100 students. Professors sometimes had to teach inside the Lund Cathedral. By the 1700s, the number of students grew to about 500. In the 20th century, the school became much larger. The Lund Institute of Technology joined the university in 1969. Women also began to join the university more often. Hedda Andersson was one of the first women to study medicine there in 1880.

The history of learning in Lund reaches back many centuries. In 1085, a cathedral school was established to train clergy. This institution, known as Katedralskolan, is currently Scandinavia's oldest school. In 1425, a Franciscan studium generale was founded near the Lund Cathedral. This medieval university was the oldest institution of higher education in Scandinavia. It predated similar institutions in Uppsala and Copenhagen. However, the studium generale did not survive the Lutheran Reformation of 1536. This led to the official founding of the modern university in 1666.

The Swedish Crown founded the university to achieve specific social goals. After the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658, Sweden acquired Scania from Denmark. The Crown wanted to integrate the Scania region into Sweden. They did this by educating teachers in the Swedish language and culture. For a long time, the school was called Academia Carolina. It was the fifth university established under the Swedish king. At its start, the university focused on four core faculties. These were Law, Theology, Medicine, and Philosophy.

University life has changed significantly through different historical eras. In the late 17th century, the student population was only about 100. Professors were often underpaid and lacked proper facilities. Some lectures even took place inside the Lund Cathedral. By the early 18th century, the student count rose to 500. The university's reputation grew again during the 1820s. This growth was driven by popular lecturers in fields like philology. In the 20th century, the university underwent massive expansion. The Lund Institute of Technology merged with the university in 1969.

Women have played an increasingly important role at the university. Hildegard Björck was the first woman to study at Lund in 1880. Hedda Andersson is also noted as one of the first women to enter the medical faculty. In 1910, Hilma Borelius became the first woman to earn a doctorate there. Progress continued as women moved into leadership positions. In 1965, Birgitta Odén became the first woman appointed to a professor's chair. In 1992, Boel Flodgren became the first female rector magnificus. This made her the first woman to lead a European university.
