Long ago, there was a king in Rome.
Long ago, a man named Tarquin ruled Rome.
Tarquin did not follow the old rules. He took power from the king before him. This was a very sad time for Rome.
He built many things in the city. He made a great sewer for water. He also built a large temple.
Tarquin was not kind to the people. He did not listen to the leaders. This made the people very angry.
One day, the people rose up. They sent the king away from Rome. They chose a new way to rule. They did not want kings anymore.
Lucius Tarquinius Superbus was the last king of Rome.
Tarquin took the throne by force. He and his wife, Tullia, were not kind. They took power from the king before them, Servius Tullius. This was a very hard time for Rome.
Tarquin was a busy builder. He made a great sewer called the Cloaca Maxima. He also began a large temple for Jupiter. He even made seats for a circus.
But Tarquin was often unfair. He did not listen to the senate. The senate was a group of leaders. He also ruled with fear.
Things changed in 509 BC. A bad thing happened to a woman named Lucretia. This made the people very angry at the king's family. A man named Brutus led the people. They swore to remove the king. They sent Tarquin away from Rome. After this, Rome did not have kings anymore. They chose to start the Roman Republic instead.
Lucius Tarquinius Superbus was the seventh and final king of Rome.
Tarquin took the throne through a series of violent acts. He was said to be the son or grandson of an earlier king named Tarquinius Priscus. To become king, he reportedly killed his own wife and his older brother. He also took power from the previous king, Servius Tullius. Tarquin's wife, Tullia Minor, helped him by working against her own father. After they took control, they married each other to stay in power. This period of rule was seen as a tyranny by many people.

Tarquin was also a very busy builder in the city. He started building the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus on the Capitoline Hill. He also ordered the digging of the Cloaca Maxima, which was a great sewer. He even built tiers of seats for a circus. During his reign, he fought many wars against groups like the Volsci and the Gabii. He also bought the Sibylline Books, which were books of prophecy. These books were very expensive and hard to get.
His rule ended in 509 BC after a very sad event. A man named Sextus Tarquinius, the king's son, did something very wrong to a woman named Lucretia. This caused the people of Rome to become very angry at the king's family. A leader named Lucius Junius Brutus led the people to take action. They swore an oath to remove the king and his family from the city. Tarquin was sent into exile, and Rome decided to stop having kings. This led to the start of the Roman Republic.
Lucius Tarquinius Superbus was the seventh and final king of Rome.
According to ancient accounts, Tarquin gained the throne through violence. He was reportedly the son or grandson of King Tarquinius Priscus. To secure his position, he allegedly murdered his wife and elder brother. He also moved to replace the previous king, Servius Tullius. Tarquin's wife, Tullia Minor, played a major role in this transition. She conspired with Tarquin to remove her own father, King Servius. After the deaths of their previous spouses, Tarquin and Tullia married each other. This union helped solidify their control over the Roman state.

Tarquin was also a ruler who used strategic manipulation to manage his neighbors. During a meeting of Latin leaders, he accused a man named Turnus Herdonius of plotting against him. Tarquin had bribed a servant to hide swords in Turnus's home. Once the swords were found, the Latin leaders believed Turnus was guilty. They executed Turnus by drowning him in a sacred grove. Following this, Tarquin persuaded the other Latin leaders to renew their treaty with Rome. This turned the Latin towns into allies rather than enemies.
His military campaigns and building projects were also significant. He led a war against the Volsci and took the town of Suessa Pometia. He used the spoils from this victory to begin building the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus. He also worked on the Cloaca Maxima, which was Rome's great sewer system. To expand the city's features, he constructed tiers of seats in the circus. He even leveled the top of the Tarpeian Rock to make room for new structures. These massive projects required huge amounts of labor and resources.
Another example of his complex tactics involved the city of Gabii. His son, Sextus Tarquinius, traveled to Gabii pretending to be mistreated. The citizens of Gabii trusted Sextus and gave him command of their troops. Once he had their confidence, Sextus asked his father how to take the city. Tarquin was in his garden and simply struck the heads off tall poppies. Sextus understood this as a signal to eliminate the leaders of Gabii. After the leaders were removed, the city submitted to Rome.

This revolution changed the course of history for the Mediterranean world. By removing the kings, Rome established the Roman Republic. This new system replaced a single ruler with elected officials known as consuls. The era of the monarchy ended, and the era of representative government began. The transition was driven by the people's desire to end the tyranny of the Tarquin family. This shift in governance would shape Roman politics for hundreds of years.
