Lucien Petit-Breton was a legendary racing cyclist.
His journey into racing began in a very lucky way. At sixteen years old, he won a bicycle in a lottery. He used the name Lucien Breton at first to hide his racing from his father. His father wanted him to have a more traditional job. Later, he changed his name to Petit-Breton to avoid confusion with another rider. He first became known for winning a track championship in Argentina.
Lucien's career grew quickly after he moved back to France in 1902. In 1905, he set a world record on a track in Paris. He rode 41.110 kilometers in just one hour. He also won the very first Milan-San Remo race in 1907. In that same year, he won his first Tour de France. He won the race with 47 points in the 1907 competition.
He proved his greatness again during the 1908 Tour de France.
After his racing days, Lucien started a business making high-quality bicycles. These bikes carried his name and were made in Nantes. The shop continued to make them until the 1960s. His life was cut short during the First World War. He served as a driver in the French army. In 1917, he died in a crash near Troyes involving a horse and cart.
Lucien Georges Mazan was a famous French racing cyclist.
His path to professional cycling began with a stroke of luck. At age sixteen, Mazan won a bicycle in a lottery. Because his father wanted him to pursue a more traditional career, Mazan used a pseudonym. He initially raced under the name Lucien Breton to hide his activities. He later changed this to Petit-Breton because another cyclist already used that name. He first gained recognition by winning the track cycling championship in Argentina.
Petit-Breton's career reached new heights after he returned to France in 1902. In 1905, he achieved a significant world record on the Buffalo cycling track in Paris. He rode 41.110 kilometers during the world hour record attempt. That same year, he transitioned to road racing and finished fifth in the Tour de France. He continued to improve, finishing fourth in the 1906 Tour. In 1907, he won the inaugural Milan–San Remo race, a major classic event.
The 1907 Tour de France was a turning point for his legacy. During the fifth stage from Lyon to Grenoble, Petit-Breton lost contact with the leaders. He finished tenth on that stage, trailing Emile Georget by twenty-eight minutes. However, the race used a points system rather than total time. When Georget was penalized for illegally changing bicycles, he lost 44 points. This allowed Petit-Breton to take the lead. He won the overall classification with 47 points, finishing 10 points ahead of Gustave Garrigou.
In 1908, Petit-Breton secured his place in history by winning the Tour de France for a second time. He rode as part of the dominant Peugeot team. This team was incredibly strong, taking the first four positions in the overall standings. Petit-Breton won the race with only 36 points. His teammates, Francois Faber and Georges Passerieu, finished in third and fourth place with 68 and 75 points respectively. This victory was his last great success in professional racing.
Beyond his racing, Petit-Breton left a lasting mark on the bicycle industry. He established a bicycle shop that produced high-quality bicycles bearing his name. These bicycles were manufactured in Nantes. The production of these branded bikes continued for many decades, lasting until the 1960s. This business connected his name to the craft of cycling long after his competitive years ended.
His life ended during the First World War while serving in the French army. He worked as a driver near Troyes. In 1917, he died in a collision with a horse and cart. The driver of the cart was reported to be insensible due to drink. Despite his tragic death, his character remains a part of popular culture. In a 1978 episode of the TV series Les Brigades du Tigre, an actor portrays him as a determined rider who refuses to quit. This portrayal highlights the spirit of defiance that defined his career.
