As time passed, tool-making became more advanced through the Acheulean industry, or Mode 2. This stage is known for the production of bifacial handaxes and cleavers. In Europe, the Oldowan tradition split into two paths: the Clactonian and the Acheulean. The Clactonian focused on flake tools, while the Acheulean focused on handaxes. Another important method was the Levallois technique. This involved preparing a stone core to strike off specific flakes. This technique is often linked to the later Neanderthals.
About 600,000 to 800,000 years ago, Homo heidelbergensis appeared. This species likely evolved from Homo ergaster after a population bottleneck. Homo heidelbergensis may have been the first to develop early symbolic language. They were also responsible for making improved Mode 2 Acheulean tools. In some parts of Europe, humans appeared that were intermediate between Homo erectus and Homo sapiens. These groups lived during a time of great social and biological expansion. The brain grew significantly to handle complex societies and changing habitats. 
We can see the reach of the Lower Paleolithic in many different regions. In South India, the Madrasian culture used quartzite to make handaxes and cleavers. Some of these tools at Attirampakkam are 1.5 million years old. In North India, researchers found 1.5 million-year-old teeth and jaw fragments. In Gujarat, evidence shows people lived in riverbeds as far back as 200,000 years ago. All these findings show how diverse and widespread early human life was. The era finally ended around 300,000 years ago. This transition led to the Middle Paleolithic and the first appearance of Homo sapiens.
