Each part of the land looks different. The Mostviertel has high mountains. The Schneeberg is a very tall peak there.

The Waldviertel has a flat area made of granite. The Weinviertel has many hills. The Danube river flows through the state. The Wachau valley is a famous place by this river.

There are many old things to see. You can find many castles. One is the Aggstein castle ruins.

The state also has many caves. Most of these caves are in limestone rocks. There are over 4,000 caves in the state. Some caves are very long. People can even visit some as show caves.

These are the Waldviertel, Weinviertel, Mostviertel, and Industrieviertel. Each area has its own special look. The Mostviertel has high mountains like the Schneeberg.

The Schneeberg is a very tall peak at 2,076 meters. The Waldviertel is mostly a flat plateau made of granite. To the northeast, the Weinviertel is a hilly area. The land then turns into the flat plains of Marchfeld in the east.

Water is a big part of this landscape.

The huge Danube river flows through much of the state. One famous spot is the Wachau valley near the river. Many other rivers flow through the land too. Some flow north, like the Ysper and the Kamp.

Others flow south, like the Enns and the Leitha. There are also several lakes, such as the Lunzer See. The state is even famous for its many natural caves.

You can still see many old castles today. The ruins of Aggstein Castle sit high above the Danube. One of the oldest abbeys is Klosterneuburg Abbey.

Another famous place is Melk Abbey, which was founded in 1089. Long ago, the area saw many big battles. In 1809, French troops under Napoleon fought here. The state has also seen many raids by Ottoman units in the past.

Today, Lower Austria is a busy and important place.

It has many big cities like Sankt Pölten. Sankt Pölten has been the capital since 1986. Other important cities are Krems, Amstetten, and Wiener Neustadt. Much of the land is used for farming or woods. About 42 percent of the land is used for crops. About 40 percent of the area is covered by woods. This mix of nature and cities makes the state very special.

The Enns flows from the west to the east. It forms a boundary between Upper Austria and Lower Austria. The state borders the Czech Republic and Slovakia to the north. It also touches the Austrian states of Upper Austria, Styria, and Burgenland. The city of Vienna sits within its borders but is a separate state.

Administratively, the state is divided into four distinct regions called quarters, or Viertel. These regions are the Mostviertel, Industrieviertel, Weinviertel, and Waldviertel.

Each quarter has a unique geographical structure. The Mostviertel is located above the Vienna Woods. It is dominated by the foothills of the Limestone Alps. Some mountains there reach heights of 2,000 meters. The Industrieviertel sits below the Vienna Woods. The Waldviertel is located above the Manhartsberg. Most of this region is a granite plateau. The Weinviertel is located below the Manhartsberg. It is a hilly area in the northeast. It descends into the Marchfeld plains in the east.

The landscape features many different types of terrain and water systems. The Danube river drains almost all of Lower Austria. The Wachau valley is a famous area located between Melk and Krems.

This valley is known for its culture and wine. Many other rivers flow through the state. North of the Danube, you will find the Ysper, Kamp, and March rivers.

South of the Danube, the Enns and the Leitha rivers flow. The state also contains several lakes. These include the Lunzer See and the Erlaufsee. Lower Austria is also very rich in natural caves. There are 4,082 recorded caves in the state. Most of these are karst caves formed in limestone or dolomite. The Ötscherhöhlensystem is one of the largest, measuring 27,003 meters long.

Mountains provide a dramatic backdrop to many parts of the state. The Schneeberg is a prominent peak at 2,076 meters.

Other high points include the Rax and the Ötscher. The state also has important alpine passes. The Semmering and Wechsel passes are used to cross the border into Styria. These mountains are part of the diverse geological makeup of the region. The combination of granite plateaus and limestone peaks creates a varied environment. This variety supports different types of ecosystems across the four quarters.

The history of Lower Austria is closely linked to the history of Austria itself. Many ancient sites exist here, including a Neolithic settlement at Schletz.

In the mid-13th century, the area was known as the Principality below the Enns. The Battle on the Marchfeld in 1278 helped the House of Habsburg rise to power. The state has seen many conflicts over the centuries. It was targeted by Ottoman raids during the Ottoman wars. In 1809, the Battles of Wagram and Aspern took place here. These battles involved French troops under Napoleon and an Austrian army. You can still see the remains of old power in the landscape. Many castles are located throughout the state, such as the ruins of Aggstein Castle.

Religious and cultural institutions have also played a major role in the region. Melk Abbey is a famous landmark that was founded in 1089.

The current Baroque building was constructed between 1702 and 1736. Klosterneuburg Abbey is another one of the oldest abbeys in the country. These institutions have been part of the social fabric for hundreds of years. They represent the long-standing cultural heritage of the Austrian landscape.

Today, Lower Austria is a significant part of the Austrian economy. In 2018, its gross domestic product was 61.0 billion €. This accounted for 15.8% of the total economic output of Austria. The state is also a major center for agriculture and forestry. About 42% of the land is used for farmland. This includes 315 square kilometers of vineyards. Another 40% of the land is covered by woods.

The state is managed through 20 districts and 573 municipalities. Major cities like Sankt Pölten serve as important administrative hubs. Sankt Pölten has been the capital since 1986. Other key cities include Krems, Amstetten, and Wiener Neustadt.
