His name might mean "veil" or "covering." Lot was the son of a man named Haran. He lived in a place called Ur of the Chaldees. Later, Lot traveled with his uncle, Abram. They moved toward a land called Canaan. This journey was a very big part of his life. He traveled with Abram and Sarai to the hills of Bethel.

As time passed, Lot and Abram had to live apart. Their herdsmen began to argue over land and animals. Abram let Lot choose where to settle first. Lot saw the plains of the Jordan were very green. These plains looked like the gardens of the Lord.

Lot is a significant figure found in the Hebrew Bible, specifically in the Book of Genesis. His name may mean "veil" or "covering." He is recognized as a person whose life shaped the history of several ancient groups. Many people view him as a central character in stories about faith and survival. His life is marked by journeys, conflicts, and a famous escape from destruction.

Lot's life began in Ur of the Chaldees, where his father Haran died. His grandfather, Terah, moved the family toward Canaan. Lot traveled with his uncle Abram and Sarai to the hills of Bethel. Later, a famine forced them into Egypt. During this time, Abram told Pharaoh that Sarai was his sister. This led to God sending plagues upon Pharaoh. Eventually, Pharaoh sent them away with many gifts and servants.

As Abram and Lot returned to Bethel, a conflict arose between their herdsmen. To resolve the bickering, Abram allowed Lot to choose his own land. Lot looked toward the plains of the Jordan. He saw they were well-watered and looked like the gardens of the Lord. Consequently, Lot settled near the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Abram chose to dwell in Hebra, staying in the land of Canaan.

Political shifts later brought danger to Lot's new home. An alliance of four eastern kings, led by Chedorlaomer of Elam, ruled five kingdoms. These kingdoms rebelled against the alliance in their thirteenth year. The following year, the four kings attacked during the Battle of Siddim. They defeated the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah. During the chaos, the victors took captives, including Lot. Abram responded by leading 318 trained men to rescue him. He successfully brought Lot and his people back home.

Significant divine intervention occurred when angels visited Lot in Sodom. Abraham had previously pleaded with God to spare the city if righteous people were found. He negotiated the number of people needed, moving from fifty down to ten. On the night of the visit, men from the city surrounded Lot's house. They demanded that Lot bring out his guests. The angels intervened by striking the mob with blindness. They then ordered Lot and his family to flee the city immediately.

The escape from Sodom involved sudden and intense destruction. The angels warned the family not to look back at the city. Lot's family hesitated, and the angels had to force them out. Lot requested to flee to the nearby village of Zoar instead of the hills. As God rained fire and brimstone upon the cities, Lot's wife looked back. Because of this action, she became a pillar of salt.

Some historical accounts, like those from Josephus, describe the destruction as being caused by lightning.

After the destruction, Lot and his two daughters lived in a cave in the hills. To ensure they had descendants, the daughters had children with their father. The older daughter gave birth to Moab, the ancestor of the Moabites. The younger daughter gave birth to Ben-Ammi, the ancestor of the Ammonites. These groups later became enemies of the Israelites. This story has been a common subject for artists for centuries.

Different religious traditions hold various views on Lot's character. In the Quran, he is known as Lut and is honored as a prophet. Muslims believe he was sent to preach monotheism to the people of Sodom. In Christian views, Lot is often seen with sympathy. Some writers suggest he regretted choosing to live in the Jordan Valley.
