Massive logging operations in the 1890s and early 1900s stripped the land. By the 1920s, most of the virgin forests were gone. Today, less than 5% of the original presettlement range remains. This decline was caused by clear-cutting and fire suppression. When loggers removed the trees, they left behind flammable debris that caused catastrophic fires. These fires, along with soil erosion, destroyed the natural ability of the forest to regrow.

Today, there are many dedicated efforts to restore these lost ecosystems.

Organizations like the Longleaf Alliance work to promote research and management. The USDA also provides assistance to private landowners through the Longleaf Pine Initiative.
