This season occurs from December to May. The monsoon also brings fresh water to the Java Sea. This fresh water changes the salinity, or saltiness, of the Lombok Strait. This makes the water there different from nearby areas. The strait also experiences strong semi-diurnal tides. These tides can reach an amplitude of about 90 meters. Because it is a major shipping route, the strait faces maritime security challenges. Large vessels, called "post Malaccamax" ships, use the strait because it is deeper than the Strait of Malacca.
