In the 17th century, temperatures fell by an average of 0.6°C after 1675. These temperature shifts caused Alpine glaciers to advance and sometimes destroy villages.

Life changed dramatically for people living in these cold regions. In Great Britain and the Netherlands, canals and rivers froze deeply. This allowed people to hold frost fairs on the River Thames.
